Kind of tired of free wood wish I could spread the wealth

Between the September winds and the terrible ice storm here . My neighborhood is running over with free firewood. I have my small backyard full. This is a firewood Paradise. Course not everyone and puts it out to curb ,cuts it up to good sizes. I dread the cost of our city and state cleanup cost. Lucky here my house . I didnt lose electric either time. But lots of my neighbors on next street did.
I bought a nice generator last year..........for insurance . we ended up needing it elsewhere. So I had another one shipped here last week, its still in box. in garage.
and stock several 5 gallons cans of gasoline......just in case back in toolshed.. I will use the gasoline in car and will alternate it. So it stays fresh
I guess Im a pesstimist ,some call me but I call my self a realist. LOL
Plus I try pickup kindling every time I walk around my neighborhood. except during warm weather.
I collected some yesterday in my trunk of car.
My neighbor offered me some Dogwood last nite. I guess Id better not pass it up. Since I read its good to burn Right???
I guess Id better get my little cart out and see if its still there. He doesnt burn and doesnt lke junk around
My back yard looks like Sandford and Son. Hubby calls it ad gets upset. I know I need to downsize unnecssary stuff. I guess Im a junk- pick up aholic tooo. I even burn old furniture I find Only occasionally though.
Bought me a chop saw to make cutting up small stuff easier. I ruined too many bandsaw blades on small "green" stuff.
Im yet to use the chain saw. Scared of it
I wish I could wave a wand and distribute all that free firewood to all of you all that need it

If you run in to a wand keep me in mind will you? I've never had that problem of too much free wood but I get as close to it as I can. (Of course I don't want to go through what you did to have the problem either. An you are right is is a blessing)
 
I have an easy solution ,rent a large Ryder movers truck. fill it up to the gills with the extra cut split hardwood and drive over to my house ill even help you unload that pesky junk
 
Sorry this storm has got my so busy i have been skipping meals and getting about 4 hours of sleep. I don't think you want to pay me what we are making right now.
 
I've got a few medium sized apple trees in the yard and a big branch that fell off a silver maple, but that's about it. Most of the damage I've seen around here are to evergreens. The redcedars got hit pretty hard. We have one in the back yard that's about 45 ft tall and luckily it bounced back to normal.
 
where is melbourne I know where melber is. And to the next post you don't want to see this sh@t. We did not have power for a week my buddy down the street still does not have power lots of wood but bad mojo.

It's in Northern Ky., on the banks of the Ohio. The wife likes to joke that our neighbors accross the street are in another state.
 
I am in western Kentucky and believe it or not we had a tornado come through on Oct. 17, 2007 and hurricane ike on Sept. 14, 2008 and a major ice storm on Jan. 27, 2009. My woods got damage in all three events. The most firewood was produced with the hurricane. Lots. The tornado was in localized areas and seems to splinter the wood and make alot of of the wood useless. The icestorm, although creating the most yard cleanup(branches), probably has produced the least firewood. My woods after all three events....lets just say doesn't really look like a woods anymore and I got some house damage from ike. But I do have maybe 5 to 7 years of firewood processed. So is the extra firewood worth what everyone has gone through, probably not. But we have to take what comes, stay strong and keep moving forward. I will have to say that living in a woods with nature and somewhat isolated from the hustle and bustle isn't all paradise. The yard work is getting kinda old. Tony
 
I certainly don't want any disasters around me, but I do envy those of you who have found solid supplies of free wood. I'm still wondering just how to get reasonably priced wood at the moment. My grapple load of wood fell through on me (will try again in a few weeks to see if the guy will call/email me back). Where I'm at I just need to find something other than paying too much for pseudo-seasoned wood. If I'm going to pay for this stuff I need to get it in my yard as early this spring as possible so at least I know it has had a summer to dry out or I'll be in the same shape as this year - hearing the occasional sizzle and wondering what it is like to really have dry wood.
 
That hurricane was odd. A lot of really strong wind (gusts to 90mph iirc) and hardly any rain. We had one medium sized tree come down. About a mile down the road it looked like a tornado hit. Most of what fell was silver maple and I got a couple trailer loads, since it was free, but didn't really want any more than that. I spent more time helping people clear trees out of the way than taking wood. I haven't been too deep into the woods behind the house lately, but I'm hoping I find some big downed limbs. I like it when a tree gives up some of it's wood without dying.
 
If we get the wind they predict tomorrow, there'll be more (Short term) power outages. I expect wind will bring down lots of dangling limbs and several trees.
 
Like others have said I do envy all the free firewood you have now BUT in no way do I want to experience what you have been through to get it. I can only imagine what a challenge it is to live through what's happened to you - and then have no guarantee that it won't happen again in a week.

We had a bad winter several winters ago. Lots of snow that didn't melt (Our snow usually melts within a few days and we aren't really set up for regular road clearing crews) - storms weekly that left roads a mess and at one point supplies in stores were down because the interstate was closed... First storm was fun but it got old pretty quickly. Clean up crews got slammed no matter what they did.

thanks for all the thought. we are doing fine. yesterday the wind scare the crap out of me. sounded like 20 men on the roof a lot of people lost power again but not us thank God. Still lots of wood to be had
 
New guy here. I live in south east missouri and we got hit by that ice also,although it was not as bad here as Arkansas and Kentucky. We have six acres here,mostly woods,lots of trees in the yard. Since that storm I have firewood out the ying-yang! Mostly branches,but also several trees that fell are will have to come down. At the rate I work,it will take me all spring and summer to clean up the mess! Gonna buy a bunch of hot dogs and marshmallows,will be having a lot of bon- fires!
