fairbanks ak
i have some trees i think are poplar/cottonwood, so im told where i live in fairbanks alaska. they are all roughly 30ft high. the bark at the bottom is rough like some cottonwood i have seen. about 8-10 ft up the tree it changes to a greenish gray color that feels waxy almost. when i cut it the very center is almost black to dark brown (no more than 3-4 inches in diameter on bigger trees with overall diameter of 18" or more) with white around it. It feels very heavy like it is water logged especialy after being cut when green. more than the birch i am used to cutting. i dont have any pictures yet just wondering if any one had a good idea what it might be.

Ja, sounds like Poplar/Aspen.

i have have some aspen trees though and these are different. i have alaskan birch which have bark like white paper, and aspen which look almost the same aside from dark black rough looking knots and limbs. the trees in question have a very green tint to them and feel waxy. the first few feet have very rough bark which changes completely after that. there is also a huge weight difference between the ones i am 99 percent sure are aspen and the one in question (apen beeing much lighter). i would like some pictures of aspen though if any one has them becuase the ones here look similar to birch.

aspen poplar tulip are in the same general family.. theres all kinds of varieties .sounds like a species of poplar ,aspens around here do resemble paper birch and poplars and tulip look alot like good hardwood and sometimes it even looks like red oak to the untrained eye in the winter ,i have found its crap wood for about anything besides shade and you cant even give it away

sounds like poplar. to me. I have a brother in
FBKS that burns it almost exclusively because that it what is available. Says it burns well enough to save a few bucks from the gas man...
