I get a lot of wood just taking down the dead trees on my own property and supplement it by scrounging here and there. Last week there was an add on Craigslist about free firewood. People had 5 trees downed in the windstorm. Went the next day to find 4 of them literally laying side by side. The biggest was an ash that was close to 3 foot diameter at the base, looked like it knocked over the other four on the way down.

Due to a tight schedule this week I only got to go twice before today. That stacked up to the pile below, approx 6' high x 13' long + 5 or six 4' lengths around 4-8"'s dia not in the pick. All Ash and Black Birch. (dam that Birch was heavy, the rounds are about 20-22"'s)

I have another full load, about 2/3 cord, in my 8' pickup bed right now.

I wish it had been more Black Birch and less Ash, but my back doesn't.

Longing for my Chiropractor...

Life is good! :)

Nice score. Craigslist has had nothing here.

Nice pile you have there.

Nice pic, thanks for sharing. Lets see the progress as you get to splitting!

So my steep icy driveway thawed enough today for me to get my truck down without using the woodpile at the bottom as a stop, and got it unloaded. Added the 3rd haul to the original. I'm building "The Great Wall of Wood".

Don't knock the ash. I weighed a piece that I thought wasn't too bad and it weighted in at 58 pounds. It is heavy wood and will get you through plenty of the winter. If you don't want that, let me know. Great stuff and will go like any hard wood next winter. I just took down a 24+" tree and was very happy.

Oh I'm not really knocking the Ash. It's good clean wood, splits easy as hell, dries fast ignites easy and coals up really well, and it's even a lot lighter to carry from the wood shed... It's just that I have to burn a cord and half to get the same BTU content as a cord of the Black Birch on the bottom of the pile or even the Oaks I usually have. But hey, free is a good number! Besides if that was all Black Birch, I'd be dead now... I thinkI ruptured something when I picked up the first piece.

The info i have is that the Black Birch is marginally better [more BTUs] than the Ash. I could burn Ash all winter and be just fine.
