It gets real hot and then bursts into flame. 
Like any softwood, it tends to burn hot and fast. In a woodstove you have at least some control over the burn rate, as you can adjust the primary airflow into the box. I burn a lot of cedar, as well as other softwoods, exclusively. Lots of the folks who have access to hardwoods for their primary fuel report that they like using cedar for kindling, because it gets things going easily and quickly. Properly seasoned, it's a perfectly good source of heat. Rick

It's burnin nice and hot as we speak! Threw a couple splits and rounds on top of the fire and it took right off.

Eastern White cedar burns hot and fast . . . quite a bit of popping action. Great for kindling to start a fire or for a quick, hot fire to get things going in the a.m. or for a fire in the shoulder seasons.
