Is the Garn fan or draft inducer an air pusher or puller? Is it an axial fan with curved blades or a squirrel cage fan. One guy said he thought it was a simple 3 bladed propeller type. There would be some restrictions to air flow, so a prop fan would not work,would it?

Wade - the fan is mounted downstream from the air box and all but the last pass of the heat exchanger tubing. It pulls air through until that last pass, where it is pushing out to the exhaust flue.

Thanks for the responses guys. It looks like my fan on my homegrown furnace, but I have no ring on the outside of the fan.Is there any purpose to this ring, or is it just for strength?

Being on the last pass I would guess that it wouldn't get much stuff on it but I'm curious, with the high velosity, does it eventually get covered with fly ash and dust and have to be cleaned?
You're gonna hear from folks who have had all sorts of debris hit that fan (nails, paper, etc). I've only been burning cordwood, and as far as I can tell nothing has made it to the fan. I guess I can't really say that for sure since I just load it and walk away, so I'll probably be removing the cleanout to take a look when I get a chance ....

Being that far away from fire box, its hard to believe a nail would make it that far. That's some serious sucking.
the garn fan is pretty much the same fan i have, and mine is from a samona 4" dust collector which pulls 500 cfm a minute. If there is a nail in the tube it will suck it right through easily.
