Remove Intrepid "Coal Kit"

I have a Intreprid Stove. (not Intreprid II, it says only Intrepid on the side). I don't know the exact vintage, but believe it is pre-1990. It is both a coal and wood stove. It states on the underneath of the griddle: "For use with Solid Wood, for Coal use coal kit" among other things.

Can anyone confirm based on the attached photograph if the "coal kit" is installed or not? I only burn wood, and if the coal kit is installed I would like to de-install it.

This stove worked well for a number of years. In recent years it has not drafted as well. Someone suggested it might be the catalytic converter. And this prompted me to do some research. And based on my findings it appears this stove does not have a catalytic converter. Another thing which might be affecting the draft is the fact that we put an addition on our home.

If anyone could help me out in anyway I would appreciate it.

I have recently restored three stoves like yours and found that previous have never clean the stoves out . When u remove the ash tray ash tend to fall behind it and make there way down to the air in take area they also get built up in the firebrick chamber the inside comes apart pretty easy that could be it . or has it always done this?

Thank you for the reply. This would not surprise me that what you indicate could be the case (clogged air intakes). And yes often when I clean it out there is more ash that can fit in the pan and it drops down. This summer I will give it a thorough cleaning. Thanks.

The coal kit is not installed. You will want to remove all the interior cast parts and firebrick, clean out all the fly-ash and soot, check and pack the seams, and then re-assemble the interior parts. Also, check the bi-metallic air control and make sure it is working properly. There is no catalytic in an Intrepid (only in the Intrepid II) but the firebricks in the back create a longer smoke path and help extract more heat from the burn. This path gets clogged up with ash and needs cleaning regularly.

An instruction booklet is available for this stove. The owner's manual is also still available on the VC website.

Thanks, I assume by "bi-metallic air control" you mean the circular spring like "thermostat" to control the air control?

Not to get off topic here but where can I find rebuilding kits and parts for a Intrepid. I have one and over fired it in the past. The stove in general is still solid and not warped but the flue area parts got twisted to the point the back metal flapper just falls in forward. The coal shakers are also due for change.
