Being new to pellet stoves and having bought mine late in the year. I was wondering how many ton of pellets to stock up for next year. I am heating around 1400 sq feet with a King Pellet 5510.When it is 35 deg outside I can run it on 1 and it will be 75 to 78 degrees in the house. Maybe some of you that are established pellet burners could give me an idea.
How many ton to buy?

3 tons conservative 5 tons if you want to be sure to have enough.
My house is a 1400 sq ft 2 story and I went through 4 tons before the season was over plus I used oil for 3 weeks in NOV.
If I buy pellets this year it will be 5 tons.
This may not be a perfect example for you though because my house is poorly insulated.

IMO, 3 tons for your situation should be fine, but also consider how fast you went through pellets when it was colder than 35. Also, how long will 1 bag run at setting 1?

Heated 1800 SF cape on 3 tons, could have used another half a ton . Too many different factors to compare one situation to another.
Thanks guys. It seems like 3 to 5 tons is going to be the general idea. Hopefully we can all stock up this summer without going broke in the process.Macman, the stove is supposed to last 60 hours on a hopper (3.5 bags) on setting 1. I dont know if it will or not we shut it down when we go to work. It has been in the 60`s here during the day.We have only had the stove for 2 weeks, but we sure do like it so far.

You sound like you may run it like me. I shut mine off when I am at work and no one home or at night UNLESS it is really cold. This is my second year using it as my main heat source and I used 2 1/2 tons. I am buying 3 this year. Good luck

We heated 2100 square feet with just shy of 3 tons (2 pallets. 70 bags per pallet). However, we didn't receive shipment until late November. I'l; be getting a thrid pallet when I order for next season.
I would guess that 3 would be fine for you, certainly no more than 4 all else being equal....

my house is 1400 and i burned 3.5 ton. i figured out a bag a day I would go threw and went from there.

A true Pellet Pig would recommend 5-10 tons a year and let the chips fall where they may.

Don't forget you can always get some now, during Summer finish stocking. I only used 3 tons so far this year but it is nice to have some extra to carry over. The stuff I bought in July 07 are just fine and dandy to burn right now with no degradation at all. Just keep them stacked on their pallet in a dry basement and you be fine with left overs. Whatever you do make sure you have all you will probably need by September as the price will surely be going up and you will be baying more than you need to.
In regard to it getting so hot on such a low setting all I can think of is "are you using a thermostat"? My pellet / corn useage went way down when I put one in. We keep our place 65 or so most of the time.

Driz, we don`t have a thermostat hooked up yet. But the wife and daughter think this temp is just wonderful so I just bear it for now. I`m sure it will not be that warm when the temp gets in the teens and single digits.
4 Tons will do it at a minimum if you are using a pellet stove a single heat source, 5 Tons would be a nice buffer if you have the space.
I live just southwest of you in Cincinnati. I burned three tons this year but have two pellets stoves. Is your stove the primary or secondary heat source.?

I burn pellets from when we get home from work until we leave the next morning. Went through about 3 ton. I always try to have 5 ton one hand going into season.

Some of you guys that are quoting low numbers, you must have some other form of heating making up the difference, or the bulk of the house must be very cool.
If the pellet stove is the only heat source in the house, you'll need at least 4 tons if you want to keep all 1400 sq ft at around 65° F for the 6 month heating season...and probably closer to 4.5 tons would be my best guess. If you are only space heating part of the house, or have another heat source, you'll obviously use less.
