There are 5 Stihl dealers within 10 miles of acton, do yourself a favor and buy a Stihl, I would recommend Harvard power equipment

http://www.stihldealer.net/locator/Results.aspx?lspr=1&zip;=&city=acton&state=MA&dlrtype=1

What saw would you rec'd that would be comparable in price to what I am looking at now?

Stihl 290 farm boss 56.5 cc 16 " bar $360.00

Of course the 290 is a mid-grade saw, and matches up more closely to the Dolmar 510; while the 5100 is a pro-grade, but... Also I haven't checked the weight specs, but I believe the 290 is also considerably heftier than the 5100...

better compared to the 260 pro. The 260 run's about 430.00 bucks both stihl(260) and dolmar(5100) are 50cc saws The 260 pro runs best on 16 in. full chiesl chain RS the stihl is a little lighter I beleave

I used to be a logger. I have always used Dolmar saws (and Jonsered). I am currently still using my Sachs Dolmar PS 6800 which I purchased 15 years ago. It has sweet hand warmers LOL! I have always had great luck with a Dolmar dealer in Orange, Mass. The name is Hume Equipment. It is right on West Main street. Here is their web page. http://www.humeequipment.com/ Good luck!

So I have called eight different dealers in the area and have gotten a full spectrum of prices.

$500
$489
$485
$485
$439
$429
$429
$404 (sadly this is the one in Orange which really isn't very close at all!)

Amazingly wide range. I am not sure how a distributor can allow for such a broad range of prices.
Also I went and looked at Stihls last night and the rep made an interesting comment in that he said only the 361 Pro saws and better are made in Germany any more, the rest are made in Virginia.

I am all for buying american from an american company but when a german company selling engineered products decides to manufacture there lower end saws in the US and there higher end saws in Germany, I think that means from a quality standpoint, the higher end saws may be held to better quality standards. just my opinion. feel free to bash me.

Lol Ive had a lot of stihl saws the most recent is the 260pro nice saw, its no 460 but didnt buy it to be. If your looking for a 50cc saw 5100 and 260 pro are as good as it gets in pro saws. (50 cc class)

Looked at the 260 last night at the dealer, it was $480 for the regular, he didn't have the Pro, it is nice.

tkuhe,
What did you end up doing?

Bought the Dolmar 5100. I love it. Bucked about 3 cords of wood last weekend. My buddy who has a Stihl 361 was very impressed and I am looking forward to seeing how the saw is after it breaks in a bit more as they are only supposed to get better. I am very happy with my decision and feel I got a very good value for the money.

Good choice, the 5100 is way more saw than the Stihl 260. My dilema is between the 346 NE and the 5100. New I am seeing 5100 for $370, 346 for $489. 5100 looks real good when price is factored in.

I have information on a Dolmar 5100 for a dealer in Norton, MA.
