I the times past it was called PROTECTION, usually administered by less than savory characters, only difference now is it has been legalized.

When I went shopping for a lower homeowner's policy a few months ago, most asked about a trampoline, pools, and dogs and only a few asked how the house was heated or if we had a solid fuel heating as a sole source of heat. Most would not even process my application when I told them I have four German Shepherds. So I'm stuck with our $900 annual policy which turns out to be a great deal anyways.

Check out State Farm. When I installed our stove they only wanted to make sure that all the manufacturor's specs (stove and chimney) in regards to clearances were upheld. Came out and snapped a couple of photos of my setup and that was it.

No increase in premium at all.

Few weeks ago I was shopping for different auto insurance. The agent offered to get me a quote for homeowners, maybe get us to switch. Over the yr., I've been turned down for having our six golden retrievers, there being no fire hydrants around here, having a volunteer fire dept. rather than paid full time dept., and so on. However, this time, a new one: we don't have central heating.

I expected some grief for the two woodstoves. Nope, just "no central heating."

Whatever.....

I have Liberty Mutual and when I installed my stove they needed no documentation and there was no increase in rates.

Liberty Mutual only cared that it was an inspected install and that a fire house was near. No increase in premiums.

I recently took over insurance for the family cabin from my father. The insurance company that he was with didn't want a woodstove in it. Liberty Mutual didn't care (as long as it was to code) and the policy was cheaper too. I had to pull the old potbelly out when it rotted out. I wanted to put a stove back in. Now I can.
