Anyone care to suggest how much wood is here?

My guess is 2 cords.

Personally I would not give him anything. Email him you will pick it up free of charge. If someone wants to pay for wood then so be it. Too much free stuff to be had,,,

I really don't think there is two cord there. I would feel more comfortable betting on 1 cord . No deal in my opinion

Yeah, scrounging around in this area on CL is a pain in the butt (I'm in Central MA too.)

I suspect that a lot of it has to do with the ALB - many people I know are scared (and rightly so) of it, or are so clueless that when you tell them they can't give that wood away, they get PO'd.

I've stumbled over TONS of free wood due to the ice storm (both on CL and not), but the majority of it is in the ALB zone. Either that, or just outside of it, or on the far side of it from me, and since you aren't even supposed to drive through the ALB zone with a load of wood, going around becomes a HUGE waste of time. Most stuff outside the ALB zone is being actively scrounged up by all those who can't scrounge in the ALB zone anymore (myself included.)

For example, I'm about 45 minutes from where this guy is - but going around the ALB zone to get to my house makes it about 1.5 hours - and my F350 is a pig. ;-) Not that I would pay for it anyway, but even if it were free, I'd probably pass.

I do have a friend in Princeton who has a lot of damaged stuff that I've hauled about 2 cords out of, but again, that's about 1/2 hour and the ALB zone adds about 15-20 minutes going around it (45-50 minutes.) If he weren't a friend who needed it cleared out, I probably wouldn't bother going that far - although it has been excellent cherry and oak, so who am I to complain. ;-)

Agreed - for those folks saying "don't pay for it"... ummm you have to try scrounging here before passing judgment.

I have picked up a couple small loads of free wood off CL, but not a whole lot. Most of the "free" offers are of the "free if you cut it down from between my house and the power lines, must be insured, licensed and haul all brush away within 10 minutes of felling" sort of posts (ok, a little exaggeration, but you know what I'm talking about). I am happy when I find posts that net me wood for less than $100/cord for hardwood around here (and I mean actual stacked measure, not what the sell thinks/claims he has... you know they all think they have more than they do).

So I do envy you folks who have lots of really free hardwood down and cut in rounds for the taking available - I just haven't seen it yet in this area (ALB is just making it even more complicated!). Of course I'm less than a year into this search so perhaps mid-summer there will be some...

Wait for a storm and people will be begging you. There is always someone who has a tree they need to get rid of. Your right, your area may be tighter and with building down it might be slower but storms do not choose... Good luck

I think it takes time, patience and good manners to really benefit from scrounging for free wood. I have slowly earned a good reputation around my area by prompting showing up to cut down or removed downed trees. I also do a pretty good job of cleaning up too. Word gets around that you burn wood and soon you get lots of calls from friends, neighbors and random people. It is to the point that I get more calls for work and tree removal than I want or need the wood.
