Big wind last night - But where is my free wood!!??

Hey stee, I hear there might be a good area of downed trees in Indiana, Minnesota and Nebraska. You could probably get it for free too. Just pray for good gas mileage. lol

I have all the wood I want to deal with right now. I have a about 10 standing dead pines in the front yard and I hate when we get strong winds. I don't want to clean up the mess right now if any go down.

I need to climb up in one of them and pull my tree stand down soon, I was a little scared last bow season sitting in it on windy days. I don't think I'll be able to man up enough this year to use that tree again since the bark is now falling off just above where the stand is. lol

Got a few down here you can have Its heating up NOW!

The South Haven area got hammered last night. A friend that I work with couldn't even get to work this morning because every road on the way to work was blocked by downed trees and power lines. He said there are litterally a couple hundred trees down in that area. If you are close to that area, you might go for a drive this weekend and start knocking on doors. I might be over that way on sunday, and probably wednsday. Or, you might get some tonight as round 2 is coming over Lake Michigan right now. Should be in Plainwell by 8:30 - 9:00. Gonna be an interesting night. I sharpened all my saws and filled em up just in case

There is a big branch hanging on the oak tree next to me. I will call the power co to come remove it and I will keep the wood. I think we got like 2-3 inchs of reain here last night

You're going to see some big rain in a few hours. Big rain just came through my area (Far NE Illinois) moving northeast. We were out at the local carnival and they shut the whole thing down and made us all go into the basement of the Civic Center. My kids were pretty scared.

Maybe you'll get "lucky" and have a tornado touch down near you.

Wow, it is pouring, already 2.25 inchs per the weather station and its still coming! We got drenched last night so I hope peoples basements are staying dry

Something to consider; if you have a scanner listen for FD calls on trees down and you have a good idea of where to head to once the area is safe! Storms are just pounding us in my area but same thing; no winds and therefore trees are just taken a shower! :-S I've been posting of CL for tree services to drop off at either my house or a friends place in the next city over but with no luck. The tough economy is making everyone consider burning themselves or grabbing up wood to sell off later this winter. I have called about a dozen tree companies and only two took my number - even then one of them was doing work right behind my house, took out a giant of a maple and they still gave the wood to their sub contractor even when they knew I wanted it. I'm starting to think this is going to be a very hard thing to get wood - - - at least free stuff. I think I will start working on my ice storm dance for this winter; at least then most people will want to stay inside vs going out to cut up trees..then more for me I hope! ;-P

Start knocking on farmers doors and asking them if they have any field edges that need cutting back, pr any lots that need thinning/clearing. You'd be surprised how much free wood you can get from farmers.

I agree on asking farmers. You can ask now and cut after the crops come out.


I've heard of one area getting 7 1/2" of rain yesterday and last night. Lots of places got 2-3" and fortunately most of the nasty stuff went south of us. We don't need more rain for a while here that's for sure.

If the weather was severe enough, people may have other things to do than post on CL. Maybe they don't even have power or their internet is down. Drive around the area and look for down or damaged trees and offer to take it away.

It might be the later mouse that gets the cheese but it's the early bird that gets the worm.

Sounds like the free wood is in southern Allegan/ northern Van Buren county.........got a couple limbs down here in Barry, but mostly it was the rain, 4" of it at my place

We had some pretty strong winds come through last night. NO downed tree though. I think the Sept 13th Hurricane Ike storm that came through Ohio, downed the majority of the diseased and weak trees. I agree with the others, try farmers and word of mouth that you burn wood and will remove it from people's yards work.

I got a nice 20" locust today that uprooted from a neighbor near my folks house. They said they will ask around to others they know and tell them I am cutting. Go around the lakes there are tons of trees down near them. And most of those people are just weekend warriors out from the city and just want the mess gone.

Head down to my town in IL! I got 4-5 cords cut and split so far from my house and the couple around me. I still have about 2 cords still to go through.

That storm Thursday night destroyed this town. It was full of old growth and well known in the area for it. We lost a ton of 30-70 year trees in town. Real sad.

Least I am set for the winter!

Wow! Big storms rolled through SE Mich Thursday afternoon...hammered the hell out of parts of Macomb county. Was already planning on going to the parents house who live right in the path of that storm, and holy cow; just about every house had either a 5' tall brush pile with 6" limbs or a brush pile with logs. It was a scroungers paradise. You couldn't shake a stick..no pun..without hitting a tree service, or someone with a trailer filling up. Now, I had already had this beast lined up from my parents neighbor who decided that 67 years was enough for this maple! The tree service said to take it all since they just cut, chip and grind stump. The fell it on Thursday just before the storms; haven't come back yet to finish the job, but already bucked up two truck fulls of 10" - 16" diameter average rounds for next season. :coolsmile: Once they cut the rest up, I will be calling in some buddies to help buck it and store it. Tree guy says minimum 10 cords here. Tree was 46" DBH, 11' circumference. There should be easy picking around the area for the next couple days. Living 40 miles west of there, I wouldn't have gone there except for this wonderful beast!

My brother is over in Macomb where they got hammered. I'm in Oakland and we made out ok this time. I told my wife last night after talking with my brother that I was going to load up the saws, hook up the trailer and go grab some wood. She kindly reminded me that the trailer was still full and I said I wouldn't bring anymore wood home till I finished splitting and stacking what I have right now. I would've still went but didn't feel like unloading the trailer. lol I had a friend in Sterling Heights call me tonight and tell me a pine in his yard came down and asked if I wanted it. I told him if he couldn't get rid of it I'd stop by to get it out of the way for him but I really don't want to make the trip for some pine when I have a yard full of them.

Agreed. My wife reminds me of the cost of gas and by the time you do an 80 mile round trip and only pull a face cord per trip (no trailer yet), you may as well just buy a cord, csd. Maybe true, but you miss out on the journey of it all! What I had seen is lots of maple at the curb. Most pines were still where they fell....no one like to mess with those except say a morbark! We too live in Oakland, at least for me I just wait for the Waterford/Highland area to get their daily smackdown of storms and normally see CL go nuts the next day. It was nice to be cutting on that big maple today, but every once in a while I would look at the trunk and see all those secondary trunks and think...what a mess this is going to be to split! Hopefully the tree guys will have a heart and make some good cuts; I hate it when they leave a bunch of "V" chunks around.

We had big winds yesterday, continuing into today and I had a few Poplars/Aspen go down. They fell back into the bush and not into my yard so I'd rather just leave them but the wife will insist that I haul them out.

Lost another tree, this time onto the lawn. The wife said, "oh good, free firewood" to which I reminded her that it's Poplar which makes ashes like talcum powder. Now she wants me to make a firepit outside to burn it in.
