The installer arrived the other day to place the Jotul C550 Insert. After a lot of measuring, we came to realize the 550 would fit into the fireplace, BUT once in, the collar of the stove would sit directly under the lintel and provide only 1" of clearance to the lintel.
Clearly, not enough space to run the venting and without some major reconstructive surgery, it just wasn't meant to be - The 550 was not going to fit.

So, since we really liked the flush design and solid reputation of the Jotul, we decided to go with the identical, but significantly smaller, C350 Winterport.

The install is completed. The insert looks great. The test fire went perfectly and without issue. The town inspector comes tomorrow.
I'm always going to wonder about the 550, and I hope the 350 will keep us plenty warm.

Even if it's 80F this weekend - I will have the new stove/insert fired up !

Nice. They look even better with a glow!!!

Freaking "A" !!!

You're going to love it !!

Very, very, nice !!!

Very Nice Install and love the stonework.
Thats a mighty nice looking unit...almost makes you wish for Fall/Winter!

The 550 was my first option too but I ran into the same clearance issue as you with only about an inch clearance to get to connect stove pipe. I loved the look of the 350 but felt it wasn't going to pass the overnight test for my heating requirements. You've got a great looking stove and it's going to provide comfort and great looks in your home. Enjoy!

Where are you located in Central MA, we might be neighbor's!

I'm in Jefferson.

Thanks to all for the kind words.
I've got my 1st small fire going now and it's absolutely great-makes me feel like a kid again !
The neighbors must think I'm nuts, 77F outside and a fire Inside-but who cares.

Need More Wood !!

That install looks great! I like the stonework.
I can relate - I had the 550 installed in May and had my break-in fires when it was 70 outside.
I was surprised how well it drafted.
Enjoy - but don't wish the summer away yet!

Very nice. I think Jotul has the best looking insert surround of any I've seen.

Jefferson MA... I've lived in MA my entire life and I've never heard or driven through Jefferson. We were in Rutland years ago at a dog breeder but didn't notice Jefferson. Oh well, might be like my bedroom community of Douglas MA.

You shouldn't have problems finding wood suppliers in your area. Look around for the best and get referrals because you don't want a load of soft wood.

Enjoy!

Charlz - Looks Good.
Love that C550 and it's large glass.

Stejus - Jefferson is part of Holden, adjacent to Rutland. (Rutland is The Geographic center of Massachusetts, by the way ! )

I'm up to ~3crd of wood and looking for more.
I've split enough for the 010/011 winter, but only have 1 crd for the 09/10 winter.
I plan to be a weekend burner. I'm definately not trying to heat the entire home all season-not with this small stove.
