Hello,

My father-in-law just bought a used Efel woodstove and I am having a hard time finding any manufacturer info. Specifically, I'm looking for a user manual that would give me the clearances. Also, this will be vented into an existing fireplace { 12x12 flue }. Problem is , he has a raised hearth { 12" } and the stove is top venting, which would mean I have to do something on the floor like a piece of bluestone and frame around it with some nice oak or something.
 
If you don't find the manual, or if there isn't a rating plate on the unit, you'll hafta maintain 36" from all combustibles.
You'll also hafta put Micore or something similar under the Bluestone...
If the stove has a 6" flue collar, you're probably gonna hafta line the chimney, as well...

Yes I'm expecting to have to put the flexible pipe up the chimney, and the plate in place of the damper opening. { what a nightmare }, but I never understood the logic behind having to put some kind of fireboard underneath a 3/4 inch thick piece of bluestone. Seems unneccessary to me but I have done that in the past on a previous install at my old house. What is the significance of a 6" collar? Does that dictate whether or not the chimney needs the flexible pipe lining?
 
While bluestone is not combustible, what lies under it frequently is. Longterm exposure to the drying effects of the heat makes it easier for a fire to start. Insulation like micore helps to prevent the heat from drying out any nearby combustibles like wood framing.

6" is the size flue pipe the stove was designed for. With a larger flue (12x12) the smoke and flue gas may slow its ascent and cool to create creosote.
 
Unfortunately you'll have to read the manual to find that out. It all depends on what the manual, and then the inspector says.
 
no, must be micore. If you don't understand why simply do the "OS" test, place a piece of bluestone on your kitchen stove, turn on burner, hold hand on bluestone, see how long it takes to find out what "OS" stands for....................

Very old stove, import from Europe, Belgium I believe. Has not been brought to this country for almost 30 years. That stove was very finicky to operate. What your describing sounds like a BIG can of worms, you really are trying to make orange juice with apples, might want to try and talk him into another stove.
 
I think the Efel Harmony may still be imported. Do you know what model Efel this is? Maybe check with Coastline to see if they can help.

It must not be the typical efel, since most are rear vented or can switch from top to rear.

I don't see how you are going to top vent it unless you can slip it way back in. Most top vents are too high to elbow back and then into the fireplace, etc.

Post a pic or a model name and it will help.
