Picked up this cherry yesterday...Its either Black Cherry or Bird Cherry. The tree came down during a storm we had a few weeks back down the street from me. This small amount is only about 1/4 of the tree, gonna be getting the rest soon. Bucked it yesterday, split and stacked it today with my Fiskars Pro splitting axe.....great axe but I think i need to invest in the Super Splitter for the next round of 15+" rounds.
Cant wait till this cures for next season, I love burning Cherry.

Nice score Mike, yep thats Black Cherry......Don't see too many straight ones here in CT.
"Twisted Cherry" is what it should be called around here........How's that 510 running.

Man its running good, cut threw the cherry without even breakin a sweat! Im so glad I consulted the forum before buying a saw!
The pics dont do the splits too much justice, its really some nice stuff....that or Im still star struck about getting it for free!!!

cherry is great, and hard to find nice and straight like that! i got a lot of it round here, and its nice and dense. burns overnight real good.. don't get too fine splitting it up!
 
The bulk that I still need to get is the trunk and one more branch but its all straight! I dont think id be able to get the trunk by myself because its so thick and I dont think I would have been able to lift the 20-22" lengths onto the truck myself. Im gonna have my father come and help!. Not sure what it is about the cherry, I burned it once last year and absolutely loved it.....nice and hot and burned long.
 
The heat is great though not as potent as some other woods but the smell when it's burning gives it a place in my winters wood pile when I can get some.

great score , what I do with those big ones is hand split until I can load them .

Thanks guys, i know that my stack isnt the prettiest but i wanted to make it sturdy and still have plenty of room for air to get at it. I've helped my grandfather forage for wood but as the topic says, this was my first time....and i have to admit, I can feel the addiction setting in! (although my back is a little sore) LOL!
 
Mike, you got a winner. We burn some cherry every year and like it.

On your stack, you might want to straighten that crosshatch up a bit lest it fall over. If you have a slant like that, it should slant towards the inside of the pile rather than towards air. But it might hold too.


Do you have a relative by the name of Rich Pinto?
 
When I encounter the big ole rounds I use a ramp (dirtbike ramp) and roll them up the ramp. I don't like to split at other peoples houses. I usually like to get in and out as quick as possible.

I did the same with my first scrounge. I just put a 2x4 in the back of the Jeep and rolled the big rounds right in. It worked well! Although, one should not stradle said 2x4 because when the round gets to the top...it'll cause the board to move upward. :grrr:

Although the crosshatch looks to be leaning, its sturdy....believe me i was testing it every new layer i made!
I have a lot of relatives in the area but not to sure of a Rich, where is he from? Im originally from CT so most of my family is there.

I hear you on that, I had permission but i still wanted to leave as fast as I could!

What is it about cherry? Don't want to assume too much here, but what I love about cherry is: easy to split, pretty fast seasoning, and nice aroma which keeps me and the neighbors happy. I have some left over from last year and looking forward to it.
 
I love it too. Got a couple rounds from neighbor a couple of months ago. It works great in my smoker, and every time I smoke my neighbor gets a 1/2 rack of ribs. Nice score, you must be becoming a wood-o-holic.

Dosnt ring a bell, I know we have a good amount of family im Florida but i've never meet them.
