If i was a little closer i would take that off your hands for you. ha ha That will be some good cutting and burning.
Have fun. I have one like that laying aimed downhill off the end of my drain field for the last three or four years. And it can rot there. Moving those rounds up the hill and splitting them are not on my agenda. Ever.

That's a very nice bit of firewood laying there! Cut it up, and then split the rounds right where they lay. A lot easier to move a bunch of small pieces a little at a time than it is to wrestle with big rounds. Big rounds of oak also tend to split/crack easier than most of the smaller stuff. It's just that there's a lot more wood in the big rounds!

One spot close to the house no less. Charlz, that is a lot of mass that could do serious damage to property and potentially loved ones. That trunk next to the boy has to be at least 3' in diameter? I would want anything like that that poses a threat to your family in the house taken down. And not just because I love a woodshed full of oak

Heck yea!....the sound of my chainsaw bucking it! ;-P
You need to cut that up. Its on your property, who cares if you can only take a few each day, it is still a great score. I tend to look for larger trees even if I have to split right there as more trunk equals more wood with less clean up of the crowns. Once you are spoiled by that, small trees really look like more work not less. Last place I cut, we had a hard time cutting up limbs less than about 4 inches. Just wasn't worth the time vs. the other trees.

The tree was on my property and fell into a common area. That large one next to it will go down someday and will hopefully fall the same way as all its weight/branches are on the one side. It will take some time for me to get the wood as I don't have large tools for that job - will go after the branches first as some of those are 12"-18".

Not exactly sure how it came down. We had a bad T-storm about 2 weeks ago and saw that it was leaning. Wasn't sure it had always been like that and I just then noticed or not. It crashed down a few nights ago - woke me and the wife up. Here is a picture of the base.

I'll help you out. I love getting into big wood. Large trunks just settling compared to limbs are just where it is at. Looks like a new saw is in the near future. PM me for what I could recommend. Cleared tons of these out of woods looking for fields.

Too bad.
Rather than saw the whole tree up and burn in the stove have you thought about selling a couple of 10' lengths for saw logs? Overall the market is depressed for saw logs, but maybe it is worth a few bucks.
