Ordered my Wood - Delivery this Saturday 08-29-09

Just ordered up 3 cords (hardwood) for this coming winter - I still have about 1 cord left over from last season. The guy I get it from does a good job cutting and splitting it and it's been consistently well seasoned. I payed $230.00/cord delivered - CA$H. He brings it right where I need it which is around the far side of my house. I then stack it on some some racks I built out of 2 x 6's which hold about 3/4 cord each. I place a folded tarp over the top row and tie it down with some rope. Works out good - keeps the wood dry but lets air get to it as well.

I've been seeing prices as high as $ 300.00/cord around these parts. I burned about 80% of the time last season and plan to do about the same or more this season. I love having a good fire going in my house - it definitely is a different (better) kind of heat than oil or gas.
 
The price in my area is around 250 to 300 delivered and usually not seasoned very well. The closer we get to burning the higher the price goes. My area also has a 30 mile driving ban on firewood which has cut the amount of suppliers, I can see the prices reaching all time high this year.
 
Last year the price of CSD hardwood in many places in this part of MA was 330-350 during Dec/Jan. I haven't bought and don't know what % of sellers actually season for a year.

That is amazing that such a short drive makes such a difference. I have seen it as low as $35/fc delivered this year. The regular guys that always advertise are at $60.

Sounds like a good time and place for a scrounger to sell off a little excess.

At 35/fc delivered is cheep, there are people around here asking 80 to 120 /fc. At 35/fc I would seriously start re-thinking cutting my own. But like everything in WNY it's expensive.

No way for me at least. Wood that I get lucky or clever enough to take then gets split hand. I love the process, but way too much effort goes into it for me to just then sell it, even at that price. Occasionally I give some unprocessed wood to my brother.

Exactly why I cut my own, I can burn propane cheaper, although I would only be able to keep my house a 65 instead of a toasty 75 to 80. I noticed prices rise as much as 15 -20 /fc when the 30 mile driving ban on firewood took place. There is still a few deals out there but usually requires you to pickup and it's not seasoned very well if at all.
 
I don't think I'd even entertain the idea of burning wood if I had to pay that for a cord of wood. A local guy was selling 8 face cords(people in Michigan don't know what a cord is lol) for 200 and I felt it was too much.

On second thought I paid almost 3k for the "PANE" last year so I'd still be ahead.

If that should ever happen in Michigan, I'll start raising trees! I wouldn't be surprised at all if the utility companies haven't already begun to weasel their way into this fuel source anyhow. With the capital they bring in, they can afford to buy all the prime logging land, cut it and sell it off the the wood burners. Sorta like how Wal-Mart is doing in the retail industry...they recognize people try to boycott them and go to the "little guy" so they are starting to open small stores under different banners. They get your money one way or another!

I'm cutting from 150 acre parcel of land all mature tree's, me and a friend made a deal with the land owner who is getting to old to cut and split to keep him supplied with firewood and we can have as much as we want. We are getting as much as we can, before he changes his mind and realizes he sitting on a pot of gold.

Wow. I've got about 7 extra cord. A "for sale" sign would pay for Christmas, and then some!
 
The remnants of Hurricane Danny have moved my delivery to Sunday. Raining pretty good here right now - supposed to get several inches before it ends. It's kind of getting that early fall feeling around here as well. I had to put on a heavy long sleeve shirt while watching my son during his football practice last night. Saw my breath while walking the dog yesterday morning. The burning season is coming upon us quickly!

This is true, iceman. You never know what kind of weather we'll get around here. It has been quite a strange summer to say the least. The colder weather is just a matter of time at this point.
 
I live in northern Fairfield county CT which is a pretty expensive place to live. Last year I shopped for a cord of firewood from a couple places that were advertising in the newspaper. I probably called 5 people and only two returned my call. The one guy I dealt with made several attemps to deliver the one cord I ordered through him. He claimed to be doing firewood for 14 years and all his wood was well seasoned. After talking to him several times after he missed several appt to deliver the wood I came to understand that he split the wood in the morning and delivered it in the afternoon. That is well seasoned wood! That is what I get for trying to buy wood in the middle of January. He was cheap though, $200 for c/s/s. I froze a little bit and just burned when I had company over. I guess my comment/question is, why would you wait until the brink of wood burning season to have your wood delivered? Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to have it delivered in April? My guess is this "seasoned" wood was split then anyways. You could save a little and buy it "green" and it will season just the same.
 
3 cords delivered this morning. I just got done racking about 2 1/2 cords. I think it's Miller Time - well Heineken Light Time to be correct! I'll sleep well tonight.

Karma my friend! Dont take adavantage of the old guy. Be responsible, cut only standing dead or sick trees, thin out the overgrowth, don't damage any sapplings, clean up after yourselves, make some nice big stacks for him and the guy will definetely work with you in the future. If you go in there and make a mad rush to grab what you can. I hope the guy cuts you off, fast! Some day you may have "pot of gold" and somone may try to take advantage of you. how would that feel? Sorry for the lecture but sometimes I feel like I have lost all hope for the generation coming up these days. :)

For green rounds at $130 per cord, two cord minimum, delivered and dumped....call Wayne Nelson at 203-312-9864/203-470-9438. I am in Redding, CT and have used Wayne for the past two years. I get next years wood in the Fall and split and stack during the cooler weather of Fall/Winter.

Very diplomatic of you, Arlo.
If done right, this could be a very long standing arrangement. Try not to think short term. Too much of that nowadays, IMHO.
