Hello all,

I just bought a Jotul 450 which will be installed on Thursday. While going over the insert, I realized the handle does not stay attached. Is this supposed to be this way?In the parts diagram, it says the handle is a tool. I don't even see how it can attach to the stem.

Thanks for any help,
Chris

Are you referring to the door handle? If yes, I have a c550 ( the c450's big brother) and the handle is attached to the door securely. Do you have the double or single door version? Have you spoken to your dealer about this?

On the two door model 450 don't you think if the handle was attached it would get too hot from the radiant heat through the glass?

Yup, the wooden handle wouldn't last too long sitting 1" away from the glass. You spent $2500 on an insert you don't know how to open?

The handle is not supposed to attach - think of it as a wierd pot holder for the door lever.

I rarely use mine, as I am in the habit of wearinglong cuffed gloves.

Thanks for the replies. Woodsy, This is the single door version. Oconnor, I will be doing the same as you, and using gloves to lift up on the handle. I don't understand why the handle is not attached. My Father-in-Law's handle on his insert is attached.

Nathan, I have the two door model but it uses the same tool. I too was suprised by this when i was looking at this insert last year. But after a season of burning it's not such a big deal. As OConner said if i have on gloves I don't use it, if I am reloading and the stove is starting to cool I can open and close it bare-handed without the handle. If I need to open it when its going full tilt it's no big deal to grab the handle. I think the two door models would look stupid with a handle sticking out of the front I.M.O. I like the look of the new single door at least in the sales literature, please post some pictures when you get it installed. All in all a great stove, my wife and I love it.
