Time to light the match in New England???

I've been burning in Northern Maine since the end of August! Couple sticks of softwood to get the chill out, a stick of hardwood before bed. Been in the 30s at night here. Keep the oil man away as much as I can!

Decided to fire up the Oslo tonight......currently 52 outside, 64 inside with 15-20mph gusts battering the house all day. One beautiful plus of the Oslo is that within 5-10 minutes of lighting her up no one in my neighbor can figure out who the crazy guy is firing up the stove so early...they can smell a wood stove, but no smoke to be found from any chimney

Was about the same here and that may well be about the same policy I'll try to stick to.

Can always bake a loaf of bread, make cookies or something (ok I know, that is cheating - but it does taste good) if need be.

I do that all the time in the spring/summer/fall. I try to do the baking when it's cooler out. Temps in WI dropping into the mid 40's
tonight. Double batch of granola should make the upstairs nice and toasty before turning in.

Yea I hear you. Nights get cold here in Dutchess County NY. I just got new glass frame for my trusty Consolidated Dutchwest. Thing is almost 30 years and works great.

Fall is on the way. Outside is 47 with 62 inside, time to put on sweatshirts. I finished cleaning the stove and chimney yesterday and cleaned the direct vent propane stove and re-lite the pilot. Bring on the cold. This time of year I'll just run the propane for 15 minutes in the morning if needed but if it's chilly on the week ends I'll burn wood. We also do a lot of cooking on the weekends baking fresh breads etc which not only warms the house but gives some great aromas.

Fired up the Oslo myself last night and this morning to take a chill out of the air . . . frost warnings were in some areas overnight . . . just burning some "junk" wood . . . some meaty softwood slabs and a split or two of spruce that was partially rotted that fell over last year. Warmed things up nicely . . . didn't make the same mistake as last year by continually throwing in more wood every two hours and running the stove wide open . . . just a quick, hot fire to bring things up to temp.

And like you . . . I love the fact that the fire has the Bowels of Hell Look going on inside and yet when you go outside not a wisp of smoke coming fron the chimney . . . gotta love stealth burning!

I havent thought of lighting a fire yet but I am getting closer as I finally took my a/c out of the bedroom window this afternoon. I have a boatload of brush(oak) leftover from the ice storm last year so I may start burning that stuff little by little.

I live near Southbury CT. I have to clean my flue before I start burning for the new season... I will probably clean it the last week in October. Looking forward to a good burning season ahead.
