Yes, it is a shame but I can't even give it away. I live in SC and fire wood is not hard to come by. I guess that I am 5 years ahead on my supply. I think all it takes is for a shadow to hit one of my pine trees and it falls. I must have 50 or more on the ground right now that I need to get out of the way.

You should see the burn piles out here. Loggers burning 30' stacks full of pine, birch, larch, tamarack, cedar, cottonwood, and fir. All good wood but not good enough for a logging truck.
I get 80% of my wood from these piles before they burn them.

Just seems like an incredible waste, but when you look around at the forests it is nothing. But it still seems like an incredible waste.

d.n.f. see if you can get us a picture of that! Also, for you pine burners do you split it by hand? Our Virgina and Lob-lolly pine are really difficult to split by hand in addition to being nasty to mess with.

I will try to get a before and after pic. Going up the logging road this weekend. They don't generally allow people up during the burn, but they are pretty lax on security.

I split by hand. We have different species of pine out here. Splits pretty easily. Knots can be a pain. And I split by hand.

i split all of my pine by hand. And I am finding it is nice to leave the rounds out in the weather for a few months to help with the sap or handle it mostly in the winter (oct - may).

Jon - you are in northern MN. My family is from Virginia, MN. Are you near there. Lived there back in the early 70's. Never been so cold.

I'm not Jon, but I too live in the Great North. Grand Rapids. About 60 miles from Virginia. I have quite a few customers from up that way. I have a retail store.
Yup. It gets kinda chilly up here for a few days in the winter.

I was in high school back then and i remember that GR had a pretty darn good high school hockey program. I remember many a pick-up hockey game at the Miners Memorial w/ the Carlson Bros. of Slapshot fame, Mark Pavelich, Buzzy Schneider, John Harrington (from the 80 USA Olympic team). Good times and no foil. Hibbing, Eveleth and Virginia always had a great rivalry.

Rapids went to the finals at State in 07 and 08. Looked unbeatable in first two rounds both years, stunk the house up in the championship. Go figure. They are just kids.
I grew up a Cidiot in the Twin Cities. Went to Alexander Ramsey, another powerhouse in the early 70's. Class of 72. Got smart and moved up here in '81.

It's about 10 miles from here. And yes, it is very cold in the winter. I grew up in north eastern Ohio, but it doesn't even come close to the weather here. It must be like northern Siberia. Most people haven't felt 80 below zero and heard a car reluctantly groan to a start. It is definitely no joke. That is one of the main reasons I love burning wood. Houses have to be evacuated if the heat isn't working in the winter. Not my house. Plus there are 1000 trees for every person. I am adjusting well to becoming an Iron Ranger.
