And they broke through one ceramic panel and cracked another. Guy said that it will be fine. He put some rock wool on top. I argued that it is engineered to have that to reflect the heat back into the firebox and to protect the steel from those extreme heats. He said that it was only to direct the smoke through the baffles and "I install 400 stoves a year and I know what it is for". I will have to talk with the owner about replacing the pieces as I will not run the stove if it is not "right". Just because you do something for a job doesn't mean you know all there is to know. The only reason I had it professionally cleaned is that it is a new chimney and stove. Last winter was the first year of use and 3 cord of wood went through it. I wanted a professional opinion of how the system fared and how often it should be cleaned. Only about 2 cups of creosote. The chimney cap will need to be cleared 2-3x a winter, but the chimney itself stayed relatively clean.

I don't care if it COULD be burned with a cracked panel or not, he should not have broken it and in my opinion is liable for the damages and should fix your stove. I would certainly be talking to the shop and politely insisting on a replacement asap. Why hire a pro to break your stove? I bet you could have done that yourself.

Definitely talk to the shop owner. Sounds like this guy is the type that already knows everything.

I had mine prof cleaned back in the spring and found a cracked baffle a few weeks back. I can't be sure it was him, but a top down brushing and ramming into a baffle could have been the problem. Next time I am removing the baffles.

I repaired mine - see this post: https://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/viewthread/41387/

if we had meant for there to be rock wool laying on top of our fiberboards we would have put it there from the factory. if the "professional" who cleaned your stove broke these panels , he should be replacing them. pretty sorry job IMHO for someone to actually damage an appliance they were hired to service and attempt a BS fix and leave , they should be replacing the panels they broke with new ones.

Thats about the lamest excuse I ever heard from a service person. Call his boss, have them pay for a new part and remove the baffle prior to your next cleaning

The guy broke your stove. The guy needs to fix your stove which means a new set of baffle boards. If he gets cheesy with you ask for his contractor's license number. That will get his attention. Virtually all localities require people doing contract work to have one and if they don't it costs them a hell of a lot more than $130 worth of boards.

Why did you pay the guy? I would have refused until he fixed his mistake.

I haven't paid him yet.

I most certainly wouldn't pay them until it was fixed! it amazes me to see that peolpe could break something and expext you to be fine it. B.S. make them replace the tile and knock $ off your bill for the poor service they provided you with and the time you have to wait until it is fixed correctly! Just bad business if you ask me

Wow That guy is as messed up as a Football Bat!

That's really takes some nerve..........

The guy should certainly replace the baffle boards. He is not only voiding the listing for the stove and in turn voiding your reduced clearances per the manual but he's exposing himself to a lot of liability in doing so. So, technically your stove now needs to be 36" from combustibles. ya hoo.

Just because someone installs stoves doesn't mean they know what they're doing. In fact, most all units have some code violation in their installation somewhere, sometimes minor, sometimes very very dangerous.

Bottom line, he broke it he should replace it.. now!!

Agreed . . . guy should replace the broken baffles if he broke them . . .

You may want to see if he is a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild . . . it may not be worth much, but if he is a member and balks at replacing the baffle he broke you can always contact the President of the guild and issue a complaint.
