How many of you are burning already!

MAN UP! It's the time of year you can get the wife to snuggle up easily, even if your armpits smell.

Matt and holding out as long as possible.

I haven't lit a fire in the house yet, but it was down to 66° and dropping when I left for work. We have a high of 61 and a low of 44 tonight, so I might pull the matches out if the house gets down into the low 60's. I'd like to hold off if possible.

My stove is not in for another week....I turned on the heat this morning. :(

I start a fire in the stove whenever the house drops below 70°F. Even one weekend in July this year! It's free heat, so we're going to be warm all the time.

I'm holding out. Luckily it hasn't been too cold yet - well that and the fireplace is torn apart for remodeling. I really need to get to work on that! It's the time of year where the trees haven't lost their leaves, so no sun hitting the house - but the temps are starting to dip into the 40's a couple of nights. Getting chilly, but I'm not giving in yet!

should have had one last night. The propane heat kicked on and off - all night long. Was chilly this morning, but still no frost. So I'm holding out.

here's a tip Lime.. get years ahead then you wont have to worry about manning up ;)

Wife holding out as long as possible. Unless I heat the house. She like hot cast iron - no armpits. Must have overfired myself, my max BTUs aren't what they used to be. I rank #3 after Mark Harmon and Harman Oakwood.

Looks like this week end should be our first burn this fall. Long rainy days coming. We are planning on homemade chicken soup and fresh made bread so that will also heat up the house. Huddle by the fire and forget the world for a few days. Course that also means chimney fires will be starting. Already burned down a home a few towns over. It's interesting to see which fire dept. in the hilltown area will have the first chimney fire. Be safe.

Just came back from hunting this morning. Almost tested my frosticles out there! Was in the 20's this morning and hasn't warmed much yet.

I've had the stove going for a few days straight now. I'm loving the 12hour reload schedule I've got going on with my new englander. It's going to warm up a bit after tonight though and I'll probably be able to let it go out for a few days.

I have a pretty simple "If . . . then" formula I use to determine when to start up the woodstove . . . generally I don't rely on the outside temps or inside temps.

Formula 1:

If wife is cold then I start up the woodstove. Result: woodstove heats up the house, wife is warm and happy and therefore Firefighterjake is happy.

Formula 2:

If wife is really cold then I start up the woodstove. Result: woodstove really cranks up the heat, wife is too warm and begins shedding clothing and therefore Firefighterjake is ectastically happy.

To light it now would be a waste of fuel even if the fuel is free. By 3pm my inside temp should be 72-73 without using any heat source other that running the computers, TV, and lights. The longer I can wait the better, but when my little girl and wife get cold I get to burning.

Happiness is really simple when you think about it. Add some good food and give thanks!

We should have had our first fire last night but we held off. Tonight is the night! Temps were at low 40's this AM when we got up, at around 5:45. It's pretty darn nippy out right now and it's overcast. DH and I will race home tonight and whoever gets home first will be the lucky one to make the first fire.
Off-topic - what's this "top-down" method of starting a fire I hear about? Sounds odd but interesting (or am I starting a fire with that question?) :cheese:

We were hoping to delay our first burn till Oct sometime but started on 29sep because of the cold rainy spell made it damp inside. Glad I did cause I'm still in summer shorts...burning is good. Actually I don't care when we burn mostly regret the passing of another summer I guess.

Top down is another method to start a fire . . . it has many proponents who feel as though this is a good way to start a fire based on the fact that you do not need to "tend" the fire and there is less risk of having a traditional tee-pee or lincoln log fire collapse on itself and smother.

You can do a search here and find the video that shows this top down fire starting method. Basically, however, folks take the larger splits and stick them on bottom, on top you place medium-sized splits or kindling and on top of that smaller kindling . . . then you take several sheets of newspaper and roll them up into bows and light the newspaper bows. The fire burns from the top-down.

Some folks love this method. Some prefer the old methods. Some have a modified top down/old school method . . . and some folks don't really care what method is used as long as the end result is a warm fire in the stove. ;)

Tis looking as if today will be the first all-day burn for us, at 8500' and some three weeks later than some years. Feels good in the house with the wind howling outside and though it is only 30 F the wind chill is brutal. Two days ago it was 75 F.

That is a big swing to swallow. It's sort of like 40 Degrees in the middle of Jan can feel great! But 40 Degrees in the middle of Sept is dang cold.

It's all relative. But I usually don't see swings as big as you do! That's just plain brutal.

Im with you mrsmarv, I'm in Beacon NY and it is indeed time to get them going.

That is a big swing. We haven't hit the 30s yet, as far as I know. I just pulled the AC's out of the windows. If we do have a hot spell I wouldn't turn them on anyway.
