You guys should spend a little dough on insulating your homes. You all must have piss poor insulation to be using heat/stoves already. Its 58 and overcast, rainy etc here and im in shorts and my house is at 72! No need to waste time with that damn stove yet.

Poor insulation? My house won't see seventy again till late next spring.
Care to donate more than an arrogant attitude? Send cash, I'll insulate.
P.S.- You shouldn't where shorts. You have skinny legs.

And probably has a electricity sucking heat generating big screen TV running while the range in the kitchen is cranking cooking and the clothes drier is running.

I live in hill country in Central NY. 6" in the walls and 12" in the attic, decent (but not super good) windows. For the past week or so it's high 30's to low 40's at night and 50's to low 60's during the day with rain, wind, and no sun ('cept for today.... FINALLY ) ). So tell me, how does one keeps one's house at 72* under such circumstances, without a heat source... Hhmmmm?!? :-S

This is for Michael6268,

The average temperature in October in Nome, Alaska is 34 degrees. You don't get that until January in Storrs, Connecticut. Between November and March, your monthly averages won't even chart with mine.

If I didn't burn wood beginning now, my monthly home heating bill would be $500 in October, and $750 each in December, January, March. HF#1 is $5 per gallon.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in Alaska was -80 degrees.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in Connecticut was -37 degrees. Shucks, I've been fishing when its that nice out.

We haven't been in the 70s since September 21st. Insulation or not, what's heating your house? Yes, if it was 80 degrees two hours ago before the rain moved in and dropped to 58, well then I wouldn't waste time with that damn stove either.

Worked hard last spring to get ready for this, my first full year of enjoying my EQ. I have been burning a morning fire for the past 4 days to get the house up to 73 degrees. It will stay fairly comfortable for the rest of ther day. We like it cool for sleep so for right now it is working out well. I have 8.5 cords ready to go, so, I am not worried about getting low. I will be busting up some of the pallets I horded over the summer, for flash fires if needed.

I finally broke down at lit the first fire this year in the stove. Wasn't all that cold out (or in the house) but did warm things up nicely and a nice way to relax after moving firewood much of the afternoon. A good functional check as well.

Quick input regarding some discussion threads on in-house temps vs. outside temps (inside house temps being greater than outside). I also can routinely keep the house above ambient with no internal heat source, primarily due to solar gain. I have a good amount of windows pointing south with a well insulated house, which warms things up nicely on a sunny or partly cloudy day. This time of year the house will hold the temps for at least a day or two, so my swings are rather minor in nature (day to night - using only passive solar).

How many of you are burning already!

MAN UP! It's the time of year you can get the wife to snuggle up easily, even if your armpits smell.

Matt and holding out as long as possible.

I live by a simple, easy to follow rule: If cold, start a fire. It works without fail.

I light my stove when it gets cool inside, which it hasnt even come close to yet. Not comparing my situation with those of you from Alaska etc. Im just saying anyone in MA, VA, NJ etc that is burning a stove at this time of year is "nutzo" or lives with paper walls for insulation. As for spending sooo much $ on isulation, last check at HD they were selling R30 rolls for 9.97 That is a far cry from the $ you are spending (those of you who buy fuel) on fuel to waste at this time of year!

I haven't started burning yet. Last year we had our first snow storm about now and I was nearly burning 24/7 at this point. I might have a fire or two next week as we will be in the upper 30's for a night or two.

Brought the insulation in the outdoor cat's house up to R13 yesterday and turned on the heat in it last night. She was having trouble getting a good draft going in her little wood stove in there.

Still no burning in the big house yet. Just knocking the chill off in the morning with space heaters. But the first time the heaters have to run till noon the 30-NC is coming to life. The older I get the narrower my temperature comfort band gets.

Its not the cost of the insulation. Its the cost of getting it in there. RE: Pulling your house apart to install and repair.

Jeez, Michael...talking to the bulk of the folks on these forums about the virtues of good insulation is pretty much preaching to the choir. As far as the price for rolls of R30 goes, I think N of 60 pretty much nailed that. Retrofitting insulation into an existing house is not a trivial undertaking, regardless of the price of the insulation. Attic? Perhaps, depends on the attic. Walls? Oh please, unless you're undertaking a major remodel. Rick

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has an outdoor "cat house" -- my wife made me put a bunch of blankets into a cardboard box to put on the back porch "in case the cats get left outside overnight." Guess she forgot about their fur coats. ;) :)
