TV above the stove

That TV will be receiving quite a lot of radiant heat (less, I know because it's soapstone). At the very least it will shorten the life of the TV - search the forum - people have talked about this before.

Heat is the great killer of all things electronic... I've avoided putting one above my stove, even though that's the best place in the room for it. Sigh.

As a new member and a 25 year Broadcast TV Engineer Don't do it, The TV will die but that could be the good news..

Earlier today i see streaks on tv in bedroom 50" plasma decide to use windex clean it off. Thing is so hot it cooks windex as I spray it on screen!! Wife finally gives up and decides it's time to take shower. 10 minutes after turning it off I still have to buff windex off screen. Electronics are hot don't need any extra heat. Keep that tv away from wood stove. Maybe good investment to buy extended warranty if you gotta have it above wood stove. Let us all know how long it takes to kill it?

u could enclose the tv in plexiglass box or inset it into a wall unit to keep the heat flowing around it. maybe even vent the tv to outside. might be an idea

Plasmas have their own heat/energy issues and would not want to raise the temp much higher than a normal operating range that should be in the manual. The LCD will run much cooler and a better choice for your application, couple of 12vdc computer size box fans behind the set to move the air may not be a bad idea.

Look at this way how much hotter is the planned location above the stove 90 to 100 I'd be concerned 75 to mid 80's will be fine especially if you keep the direct radiant heat away. BTW I'm a Tech and have a plasma set about 15' from my stove but my air is usually moving in that room and no I have not measured the temps I figure technology changes will make me want a new set every 5-10 years anyway.

Check into the Samsung LED tv's, I think they operate at a lower temp than other flat screens. I have had a 37" lcd over my insert for 4 years now with no issues, "But" I have a hearth which deflects the heat.

As mentioned there are other threads here on this topic . . . my take is a) I like to look down or straight on at a screen (even in movie theaters vs. looking up) and b) I would be concerned about the heat since electronics are often sensitive to temperature extremes of heat (and cold.)

Question: Was the TV a CRT, LCD or plasma (or other type) of TV . . . and at what height was the other TV sitting at?

But that's my point - you ask, should I? Everyone says it will lower the lifespan of your TV. Then you say you're not worried about the heat. That's not an educated decision. An educated decision is "ok, I now understand that the TV life will be lower, but I really want the TV there". That's fine.

OK, gotta ask . . . Carbon Neutral and They Call Me Pete. If the Yankees and Red Sox were playing in the Pennant Race you would support . . . .

For some reason I could easily see CN rooting for the Sox and TCMP rooting for the Yankees . . . but then again I could be wrong.

Yeah, I figured that . . . now the real question will be to find out if TCMP is a Yankees or Sox fan . . . it could explain things since we all know the rivalry runs deep between the Sox and Yankee fans.

Well I've got to disagree with ya . . . football is where it's at.

anyhow try enclosing the tv in plexiglass and using a fan to cool it to the outside.

Relying on the ceiling fan is a mad idea unless it is fully automatic, i.e. it comes on automatically as soon as the stove gets warm. Relying on a human to turn it on is never going to work.

I have to ask, which is more fun to watch, the TV or the wood burner? I would think the wood burner...

I would avoid this if at all possible. Putting a TV near a heat source is never a good idea and by simply rethinking your room layout you can avoid this altogether. I can only speak for myself but I personally don't like heat blowing directly into my face anyhow. I'm not sure if a soapstone uses a blower, but if so you may want to rethink that. Besides the stove will be the focal point of your room; you don't want your TV creating competition.
