A sunday well spent...

After downin a few cups of coffee this mornin i headed out back to move some splits and ended up out there all day long. Got a bunch more split and burned off quite a bit of scraps in the firepit. Sure is nice with fall finally here!

Nice pics. Was just down in Jersey City a few weeks back and drove around a bit to an inlaws inland house. You got lots of nice white oak down in your area huh?

Yes sir, lots of white and red oak around. Shame it alot of it got wiped out by the gypsy moths.

And jersey city is a good ways north of me but still beautiful country if ya get out of the city...

It's a line from a Leadbelly song that was covered by Nirvana in the 90's. Both versions are amazing. I imagine he's using that quote to refer to the part of Jersey known as the Pine Barrens. The folks that live there used to be called PINEYS. Don't know if that's still the case, but I know the Barrens are a pretty unique place, wilderness in the middle of, well, Jersey.

okay i need your help to clarify something... the rounds in the second pic... what is that? i cut a bunch that looks exactly like that in the spring that everyone here said was ash, but then began to have doubts when the farmer that rents my father in laws field where i cut them told me they were basswood...

they dried pretty light but seem to burn okay.

All the pictures look like red or black oak to me, except the last one, with the little bicycle, I can't tell for sure.

well, im pretty sure they arent oak. they dried very light, about half the weight of similar sized pieces of maple. they are pretty soft, my moisture meter slides right in to the wood, compared to maple.

heres the origional thread i posted about it... seemed to be a 50 50 split of ash vs basswood...

Still a few "Pineys" out this way! Most people don't realize such a place exists in "Jersey" North and South Jersey are completly different. Out by us it's all forrest and Farmland.

The second group of pics is from a different person. I agree that piney is white oak. I have a ton of it lying on my property. The second type of wood grows much faster. Look at the size of the growth rings.

white oak

That's not white oak. Bass wood possibly. The bark doesn't look like ash to me.

Nice way to spend a Sunday. I spent mine sweeping up leaves and mowing.

I could cram another 2 or 3 cord into the shed if I wanted or leave it outside for the Winter. I like having a bit of room in shed for my rolling scaffold and my chopping block to make kin'lin.

Speaking of kin'lin, I need to stop procrastinating and get cracking on it. Hmmm... do they sell Super Cedars in Canada?

The rounds in the second pic are black oak. Very similar to red just the bark aint as smooth.

And yea i realize there aint any pines in the pics but go about 1/4mile down the road and it's 1000's of acres of state forest that is what many call
"the pine barrons" I grew up right here in the heart of em too. Nothin like explainin your accent to someone by callin it "piney" haha!

Like the bumper sticker says "Im a Piney from my head down to my Hiney"

I haven't dug clams in a while but I did manage to drag two nice stripers off the beach up in Ortley last weekend.

But if your from the shore than your prolly more clamdigger than piney. Nothin wrong with clamdiggers though! Just have salt in their veins lol.

regarding the basswood vs. ash pics.....
it's Basswood. dries light, burns quicker than white ash.
White ash is double the weight of Basswood.

Yea your prolly right about being more clamdigger but I do spend a bunch if my time in the woods so I was kinda confused about my proper geographical designation, kinda fond of takin the kids to whitesbog for blueberries and playin with the turtles and such.

Nice stacks by the way.

Sweet ,I hope to put a few in the freezer soon.
Got out last Tues. night but no stripers, but did manage 9 kingfish 6 croakers and 2 weakies

Prolly totaled up to about 3 pounds of meat-lol

Ah good ol whitesbogs. I can get almost all the way there through the woods. Nothin like a nice drive through the pines in the fall.

Man I wish, I got Rt.37 then 70 in my way.
Did not get there this summer, job schedule and all, lost my dog training day and everything.
