Buddy of mine just called me today and tells me that he is buying a pellet stove and has no use for 1.5 cords of two year old wood that he has had in under his deck. Tells me I can get it for free provided that i go get it this weekend. oh and I gotta give him some money for a metal wood stand he has or babysit his kids saturday night so he and his wife can go out on a much needed date. To which i said, Heck Yea bud. I should have about 5 cords ready to go plus three black locusts i just cut a few days ago for next year. its Xmass in October.

How old are the kids? If old enough, take the babysitting gig and have a "stacking party"! They can help restack all that free wood on the free metal stands and the labor is free! Win x3 all around! :p

Oh these are little guys. Too little to stack, but great idea.

Your wife watching the kids and you getting free wood seems like a good deal to me!

Back when I bought my former home, I had just come off a long construction job and had no wood or even a wood stove. The first thing I did was to put a stove in and I had the very good fortune to find someone that had the misfortune of a chimney fire. Turned out the fire marshal condemned his install and it was not worth it for him to bring it up to code so he gave me more than 3 cord of very nicely seasoned Ash. The only deal was that he wanted it gone all in one day so I rented a large truck and loaded it up until the back bumper was almost dragging on the ground. There was a half cord that didn't fit so the guy tossed it in his truck and away we went. Only problem was that he cut it all to 24" and my stove only took 20" so I had to recut every single piece.

My brother is clearing out his property around his house to let in more light, he has close to 8 cord of oak cut and split and says I can have it all, but I have to drive half hour one way and I have only a 5.5 ft bed on my f150 supercrew, so I bought a trailer last week to take more in one haul, just cant pass up 8 cord of free oak already cut split and stacked for over 2 years!

Sounds to me like that wood just paid for the trailer :)

I love hearing these stories as it gives me hope for finding them myself. I've had a couple near misses, but I'm hopeful my ship will come in someday. Just hope I haven't filled all my storage space before it happens.

Free wood is great...free seasoned wood is outstanding.

I stopped by my town's transfer stations(Dump) last night on my way home from kids soccer practice and scored 4 6ft long ash logs. It's free brush week in our town and people usually dump whatever wood they can. Last spring I scored about a 1.5 cords of ash, locust and maple.
I have a saying about beer that also applies to wood:
"CHEAP IS GOOD, FREE IS BETTER!"

Cheap natural gas is a close second.

well, wait 'til you see what i look like.....If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck....

I scored a cord + of well seasoned, split ash about a year ago from a family friend that planned on a woodstove, but bought a pellet stove instead. My avatar is a picture of that load.

Nothing beats free wood...

Sure it does...

I guarantee that there is nothing "free" in that picture.

Ja, sure looks high maintenance to me.

Nor real. The wonders of computer and surgical enhancement.

We haven't paid for any wood for this year's burning and we have close to 5 cords of seasoned, ready to go wood. We've been "collecting" wood from friends and family and from the side of the road. Hubby was cutting some up during the spring and a guy stopped and told him that burning wood was a lifestyle and tha's pretty much true. Nothing says lovin' like free wood for your oven.
And a hello and wave to KatWill from :p Beacon. Howdy, neighbor! We're across the mountain from you in Wiccopee (near the Sharpe Reservation).

I'm in the process of putting taller sides on it as we speak, soon as that's done i'll snap a few picks of it, it's a 5x13 single 3500lb axle. Had our stove installed today too, I'll get some pics of that soon as well and post em

I hear ya, I fell under a big lucky star. When he said I could have it all I had to change my underware, twice.

Be careful with that...I have a 5x8 with a 5K axle, 4 foot sides, and a noticeable bend in the tongue. It adds up quick.
