Ok, well, now you've probably jinxed me as I have never burnt myself. So, I probably have a few burns coming my way this seasons...

BUT, I will try to be more careful as to not whack the back of my head on the barn beam mantle that is above the one stove. Ugh, my poor head took a beating last season.

I'll take that pledge. We should keep this thread running and post photos of our battle scars. I wish I could pledge not to get splinters to.

While loading my old Earth stove, I re-learned respect for heat each year by getting one angled forearm burn. The stripes were usually not in the same spot. People would see the black crusty stripe and ask how I got it. I would point out a faded scar near it, then another in parallel, then another: "This here is 2008, that is from 2007, 2006, ..."

The only time I get a burn is when I forget to put the gloves on - and they sit right next to the stove!

i have 2 permenant scars on my left hand from loading wood in my furnace last season ..till i smartened up(DUH) and bought the welding gloves
its easy to get complacent and in a rush ,but it only takes a split second to get bitten,wear the gloves if you dont own a pair buy them and dont cheap out on them ,get the ones that go up the arm thats where youll likely get burnt .i learned the hard way as my modeling career is now over and i look like the toxic avenger from the wrist down(not really but you get the idea)

When I first started doing this back in the 80s, I was a teenager. I had 3 dark red stripes across my forearm for a few months. I got a lot of sympathetic and questioning looks.

Doop......I got two small marks already.

My mom bought me an "ove glove". Works real well and haven't been burned yet in my first year of burning.

Do yourself a big favor and save that "ove glove" for the oven and buy a set of these. The burns you will get will be on your arm above the "ove glove"
You can buy 3 pairs for $10 at Harbor Freight!

Fortunate enough to be a firefighter. Therefore I have access to spare firefighting gloves - they work great.

And a pretty handy truck that makes cleaning the chimney REALLY easy.

Having burned wood since my youth, it is just a natural thing to put gloves on before opening the firebox door. Even then, over the years I've got a couple burns but nothing serious.

I have the blue suede welding gloves that I purchased for welding but keep them next to the stove in the ash bucket, you can actually pick up burning logs and coals to better position them. I grew up playing a board game called "operation" where you needed to reach inside a small hole without touching the sides. I don't get burned by the stove, but I get radiation burns while trying to move a log back from the glass or to straighten out a cockeyed log so I throw the gloves on when something goes wrong so that I can keep my hands in the stove longer.

And a pretty handy truck that makes cleaning the chimney REALLY easy.

I wish Our 95' Tower Ladder won't reach my chimney from the road. Fortunately my roof pitch isn't too steep, and I can scramble up and down pretty easy.

I don't do it every year, but I've had multiples in one year.

I hope you shouted at the top of your lungs "BECAUSE EVERY G#% Da$% DAY I HAVE TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU" and then burst into tears.

Or just went dead calm and slowly walked towards her with your eyes locked on hers and whispered "I didn't try to commit suicide...I did commit suicide...in 1904...you can see me?"

I burn myself a couple times every year. Nothing too serious. I never wear gloves for anything (except when my hands are cold).

Too late I already got my yearly reminder burn that the stove is hot
I have gloves but most of the burns I get are just above the gloves so...

The FV has a little dinky handle that gets real hot and requires the use of gloves. Result - no burns. The old stove had a cool-touch spiral handle and I (hands) looked like a poster child for the skin graft industry. Sometimes you just need a kick to do the right thing..

The stove gloves I find in HD and the wood store only go half way up the forearm. Sometimes I need to go deep thru the side door of the Oslo. I get the arm above the glove. What has worked for me is gloves and an old flannel shirt. Just a lot of work getting suited up to load the stove, so I skip both until we get into burning all day, 500 degree stove and I get bit a few times.

Any know where to find extra long stove gloves out there?

I seem to get all my burns up above my gloves while I'm reaching in to load the back of the stove. Have a few nasty scars there, so I'm pledging to avoid anymore!
