Is $175 unreasonable for this saw even in decent condition? I understand they are about 40 yrs old and about 55cc saws. It has an 18" bar on it as it is but an engine that big should be able to pull 20 or 22" bar. I would also like to give a chisel chain a go and understand that i can't get for my husky 350 with a .325 chain? Would i be able to run a chisel chain on this saw? Thanks in advance.

yep thats a old saw for sure top handle or rear handle?

I would not pay that much for such an old oddball saw. Parts have got to be hard to find at this point. Sure it may run fine now but how long will you be able to keep it running if you cant find parts for it?

this one is a collectable and even more so if its a top handle sure not a work saw that I'd worry about the chain Iam running but nice saw

You can get chisel chain for your saw. Go to a real dealer, not a store that sells crap from the Orient.

its a darn good looking old saw[/quote]

Ayup, there's something about the older Stihl saws I find very appealing.

Thanks for the responses. It is a very cool looking saw. I tried to link the ad from CL. It's in the hudson valley section of NY. So i wouldn't be able to run this saw too much due to reliability reasons?

thanks brianvt - i have been told at the local shop that i couldn't get a chisel chain for my husky that is why i said that but i will look into it elsewhere and get the chain. Thanks

I just like the whole idea of using something that is from the past and tinkering wiht it to get it going, that why i liked the old stihl.

that looks like a sweeet one from the ad rear handle but still looks worth the money

smokinjay -- the pics look good, saw looks to be in real nice shape. I have had a couple of stihls in the past, but they have been relativley new, could this one be a saw that could be used often. Basically i am a weekend warrior as far as cutting wood, not in the business or anythng, have you got lots expieience with this saw in particular or any was of the same vintage? I guess what i am asking is how hard is it to get old stihl parts, i have some experience finding parts for old dirt bikes and the like and sometimes it isn't easy. Are chainsaw parts readily available?

I wouldnt want to use it for a work saw would be just nice setting there or for fun! parts will be pretty hard to find... this is more of a collectors item than weekend warrior saw
