What is this tree?

That is a Black Cherry. It should be nice firewood by next year. It falls in the middle of the hardwoods in terms of BTUs, splits easily (although your tree will have some knotty rounds), and seasons in a year, by all accounts.

Not like you need confirmation after you hear from Lee, but it's definitely black cherry. Burns great and dries quickly. Cut and split now, it will be more than ready by next heating season.

no doubt cherry, I have tons here in western pa. My main burning wood. Not the easiest to split, but dries fast, smells good. If you look at my HH in the picture it is all cherry.

OK...I'll be cutting it down soon and sounds like it goes to the hardwood pile. He has 2 of these to come down, the pic is the smaller of the 2. The larger is near some electric lines and I think I'll ask him to have a professional fell it and I'll take care of the rest. If the price is right I may even pay it for him...should come out ahead since I estimate around 3 cords of wood total and maintain that good neighbor relationship we have.

Perhaps the reason some follow Lee is that they too know exactly what it is! Some definitely guess though.
Of course there are many folks on here (like yourself) that know their trees. In this case, black cherry was an easy call. Other times it isn't so easy and there might be 4 or 5 random guesses as to what a tree might be, but the second Lee jumps in with his best guess, it's always amusing to see the consistency afterwards! 
Dangit, I was going to say cherry. But now that Lee said Cherry, I guess I'll have to say.. um... PINE, so I don't look like I'm copying.

I say it's Fire Wood. Try burning a piece and see what happens. If it burns, that will confirm my identification as Fire Wood.

The lower part of the tree was around 38% on the mc meter...the branches that were too small to split were around 26%. Looks like next years firewood.

Agreed, he always seems to get to it before me, I guess my forestry training isn't ever going to pay off :lol: Seems that some people want it to be something better than it really is. It can't always be Oak or Hickory ;-PBackwoods Savage said:
