Before and after. Bin is 12 feet deep, 9.33 feet wide, and its stacked 7 feet high. Took two men 6 hours. Seven trailer loads. Feels Good!

Thanksgiving weekend I need to stack the 4+ cords that are in heap-hausens on to the pallets that this wood came from. That wood will be for 2010-11

Hope you bought your stacking buddy some beer!!...Nice Job!

I dunno...looks more like 6.21793 cords to me. Of course, the mouse nests will eventually fill in all the gaps. Rick

Nice. Will you burn through that this winter?

I don't know. I am keeping really good records this winter (as denoted by the three decimal places that Fossil, rightly so, is mocking). I'll keep you posted!

Not makin' fun, partner, just havin' fun. Nice stash of wood. In my experience (and I'm a very anal engineer) stacked wood really doesn't lend itself to more than one decimal place. I'd just call it ~6 1/2 cords, with the emphasis on the "~". ;-P Rick

Are you making daily adjustments for shrinkage?

No worries! I too am an anal engineer and I figured I'd get a laugh with the decimals. We are all wood geeks anyway. I wish it would get colder! :)

I'll be putting mouse traps out tomorrow. What do you guys think of termites and carpenter ants? I live in Marathon County, WI and don't know if these pests are in my area or not.

Nice stash you got there. I wish I had that kind of covered space that I could use to keep my wood sheltered - ah one day...

I was going to comment on the term "anal engineer" but I didn't want to get your thread swept into the ash can!

:)

If the wood is well-seasoned, the carpenter ants are long gone. As for termites, I have never seen one around here, a couple counties south of you. If it weren't for pictures, I wouldn't even know what a termite looks like.

Good work and you had help too! It sounds to me like you let the wood season a year outdoors before taking it inside. That should work well and you won't have to move that white stuff to get at your wood.

Here in central PA, termites are not common in firewood. I have never seen one in the wood I have scrounged off the ground, cut live, cut dead standing, etc. I think there are termites in all parts of the country, but in the north they aren't common in the wild. Carpenter Ants are a different deal. They are very common here, and there are many different species of carpenter ants that inhabit pretty much all of north america. In PA forests, it is very easy to find trees infested with Carpenter Ants. I am sure they are found in Wisconsin, and I bet they are quite common. They seem to leave firewood once it is split and dries out, but I am sure they are in your area.

Agreed. Once one gets to the thousandths in cord reckoning things can get sketchy in a hurry.

the house I live in had to be treated for termites when I bought it. A couple years later I had some old boards on the ground, when I went to clean up the ba@#%$^s were in it.. Took care of them real quick.. :coolmad:

Nice garage you have there!!! I am sure it is a good feeling to have your wood where you can get it in your slippers!!!!

Thanks. My wife is smiling too. She knows I will stop working outside and now sit inside with her and enjoy the fire instead of working for it!

I don't like any of the mice , termites , or carpenter ants. I am no expert but I bet you have the ants in your area they are just about everywhere. I can't say they are present in dry seasoned wood as they need moisture to survive. The only way to infest the house is to bring in the flying scout ants with the wood or a nest in some wood. If you just bring in a few workers they cannot start a nest and will not cause any damage according to the extension service. Keep an eye out for any sawdust that could indicate ants have been there.
