Backwoods,
My guess is that when the damper is set in the 0 position the remaining path for airflow is not enough for the smoke to backflow. There must be some sort of balance between the open loading door and the intake. Smoke seems to shift flow if the balance of air flow into either opening is not proportional.

This issue can be addressed by closing the air if the door is wide open. Its a special circumstance that doesn't happen all the time anyway. Basically when I've noticed smoke coming out the air intake I shut the valve or finish the loading and shut the door quickly.

Now, as to whether the manual adequately informs the user as to this issue - who cares? Its pretty hard to guarantee getting absolutely zero smoke when when you have a wood fire inside your house. I'd recommend just loading quickly and shutting the door; and maybe taking a glance over at the air inlet to see if smoke is pouring out to see if you need to shut the valve.

I get more smoke from creosote on the inside of the door if I reload really hot. This tells me to wait until its cooler, do it fast, or use drier wood. I don't think that's in the manual either.

Im not a fireview owner,,so im reading this thread out of curiosity more than anything,, However in your references to using a laser with adjusted light control,,im not so certain you are not creating an enviroment which enables you to see things you normally wouldnt see,,hence why they made Hepa filters and such,,,when the sun shines just right through a window,,and the two gogs are cuttin up and playing, they will kick up all kinds of dust which will set you back upon seeing!! We are not clean freaks by ant means,,but do realize our lack of a mud room to trap most trackings (human and canine) requires perhaps more vacumning than some. Even so,,its amazing ,,the amount of particles in the air,,much less those found in an air pattern associated with burning wood appliances. Just a thought.

Now I have had some time to experiment but have not been able to repeat what you are experiencing at all. No matter how far the firebox door is open it seems not to matter. Curious....

I have not seen or smelled smoke on reload with mine. I can't imagine smoke going anywhere but up the pipe if there is a fire going and decent draft.

I've tried it a few times in all kinds of different air settings and loads, I can't get smoke out the air intake or a flame from my lighter to push away. Open up your top and check the rope gasket for the air duct, I wonder if you could have a leak in there somewhere causing this?

For sure that is a good sign all is well. I love seeing that cat glow.
