I have been working on my wood supply for next year as I realize I do not have nearly enough for this year. I cut down 3 large trees in my front yard and have bucked and split two of them. The other is an oak that was mostly still alive but had been struck by lightning. I have bucked most of it but it is so wet I cannot split it. So I will pile them up and let them dry out for a few months and try again.
I got a hold of 4 4x4 pallets and placed them in the back yard to start stacking. Got most of what I split stacked and maybe had 3/4 of a cord. I then looked in our local paper and someone had advertised 3 cords of "seasoned" oak for $300 you load and you haul. I knew it would probably be 3 face cords and may looked seasoned outside. Decided to go by and just look and there was probably 1.5 to 2 full cords there. While talking to her she knew she was asking to much so I made her an offer of getting two full truck loads for $50. She told me someone else was coming that Saturday to pick up some wood so I decided I would show up earlier
Got there about 8:30 in the morning, Some of the tree was already split so I got a truckload of splits. Resplit one and 0 moisture inside. Loaded up the first truck load, took it home, stacked it up, went back and loaded up some more splits (left some for the other person, and loaded up some good rounds. Got the second load done and back home by 11:00. Split the rounds, stacked everything and right now I have about a 4 foot wide (double stacked) x 16 foot long x 5 foot high stack of wood. Have a little more wood to stack up as well.
Also talked to a guy who has a tree service and he said he has a lot of trees out behind his shop that I can come and cut whatever I want. When it dries up I will start going there and getting even more wood prepared and hopefully get enough to start a pile for 2 winters from now.
I know it is not as impressive as some but for now it is pretty good. Will continue to scrounge and cut what I can in the next few months.
