I Need Ideas...

Hi all, new to the forum...

I built a house last year and had a Quadafire Castille pellet stove installed in the living room. It is currently sitting on top of a constructed hearth pad covered in ceramic tile, but it looks plain and boring. I want to make the pellet stove the focal point of the room and possibly install a TV and mantle over the stove.

Do any of you out there have photos of a pellet stove installed in a corner of a room with a dry stacked stone hearth and a TV mounted above the stove? This is what I would like to eventually do and would like to get some ideas from you. I'd like to see what you have done to dress up your pellet stove in the corner of a room with some stone or brick behind it (and hopefully with a TV and mantle or shelf over the stove).

I'm sure there are tons of photos out there already in some of the other forums, but I was hoping that I could request something more specific to review instead of looking through all of the posts on the site.

I really appreciate the help...can't wait to see your photos and hear your suggestions and comments...

Welcome to the forum. Hope you get some ideas from the members. You should take some pics of the present install so everyone can understand where you have the stove positioned in your home.

Plus, as we say on the forum about "new" installs....."if you don't show us pics, it didn't really happen"..... :lol:
 
Will do...I currently don't have any photos with me (I'm traveling while I'm posting this) but will take some on Friday and post to the forum. Thanks for the info...

A Castille pellet stove plain and boring? Heh,heh. My Harman P38 is boring , ( looks like a toilet bowl ) but I always thought the Castille was a cast iron beauty specifically designed to appeal to those who wanted something significantly better looking than a plain old sheet metal stove.
I`d have to think it would already be the focal point of the room and if you still need to attract attention to it your room itself has be something quite majestic and maybe beyond my imagination.

My Harman stove is in the corner of my living room as well, sitting on a constructed pad just as yours is. We constructed a rock wall behind it to dress it up more. At work today but will post pictures tomorrow morning for you too look. Really makes the stove a focal point in the room.
 
Gio...the stove is wonderful and really is quite attractive. The area that it is sitting in is boring and dull. I want to give the stove the attention it deserves which is why I'm looking for help. I'll submit a photo later and you will see what I mean...

amick780...looking forward to your photos...sound like you may have a similar situation as mine. I'll post photos in the next day or so.

I think if you or you had someone build you a oak or some kind of wood mantle shelve for above the stove that would be enough to sort of frame in the stove. I believe this would be an inexpensive way to dress up the stove. Check out the pictures of mine, and look at the oak shelve just imangine no stone.
 
I just finished my basement and had dreams of a castille type stove down there. Found one on Craigs list and got it going this week. I put it in an alcove with Half logs around it. Made the Alcove out of pavers. Turned out pretty cool. Once I figure out the picture thing I will post it. I had quotes on stone, brick, etc. They all would have cost me more than the stove. The pavers are cheap, work great, install easy and look great. Pics later.
 
I have a corner install of a Quadrafire Mount Vernon and I love it... it is the cornerstone of the living room and it is the first thing people see when they walk into the living room. The pellet stove took the TV's space and I was able to talk the wife into a Sony LCD wall mount TV because of the stove placement.

With that being said, I don't think hanging a TV above a pellet stove is a good idea. Electronics don't like heat and heat rises. The air directly above your stove is hot and is very possible it would shorten the life of the TV.

Our TV is hung on a wall about 6 feet away. I can get some pictures tomorrow if you would like. I just don't think a TV above a pellet stove would work out in the long run.

Just my 2 cents... do with it what you like....
 
How about some color? My dealer routinely paints stoves for customers in some pretty attractive colors... dark reds, silvers, grays and several shades of green plus many more. They use a high gloss, hi-temp paint that mimics a ceramic.... sure spruces up the look!

I'd like to put some color on my St. Croix for next year...
 
My neighbor's install, nothing above it, direct vented.

I built a simple raised hearth for my Castile this year. This is a picture just before I started the grouting. I like the idea of a mantel, but not to crazy about a television or any other electronics on the mantel do to the elevated heat. Electronics and heat are like oil and water. Also for what it's worth I chose to exit the stove and rise 4 1/2' inside then a 90 to the outside to not only help with the draft in case of a power outage, but just in case I switched stoves in the future I would not need to cut another hole in the side of my home, just shorten or lengthen the inside pipe.

Depending on your skill level, you can go on the net and get a picture of the TV you want to put there. Crop it and paste it into your room picture. Just adjust it so that it is ratio to your picture. Most photo software that comes with a camera will do this. We do this at my work to see what signage we are thinking about putting up might look like.

if i remember correctly, kinsman did this last year with one of his breckwells, red i believe, and it looked very sharp.

That looks fricken sweet! Good job, love the wood. Now if it had that insert doohicky.... Need to get that vent straight, 45've or 90 it where the stove connection is, or even better where the top vent connection is and get her 90'd. Looks nice either way!
 
I've custom painted four stoves for others. I have no pics, unfortunately. One was an older Avalon in a hotrod shop. It was basic red, all vents and openings were yellow rimmed and we did a background color inside of brilliant white. The controls were chromed and the door handle was an 8-ball. You could not miss it. The most interesting was a Whitfield, I think, it was done in an antique Vertigris. A little too much for me, but it really stood out. Helped a friend do his in Hammerite, thought the tool box look suited his needs. I've stayed with basics, but this Summer I might try one in my old bike racing colors.
 
One thing to think about is the lighting. Depending on where you put the TV, how will the flame from the stove and the TV itself look in regular light? And then the lights are dimmed or turned off?
 
You could also continue those tiles or a contrasting color up the wall to the oak mantle that Amick said. Or maybe pierced or hammered brass squares. So many possibilities.

Yes I saw that too. And hearthtools has his stove(Enviro Omega) 2 toned. Both stoves were in red tons. Both looked very sharp! I may do mine someday.
 
I agree with the last post.. hammered copper or brass or prefabed squares or diy... are one wat,

I am doing wonderboard and tiles on the wall as a backsplash... still in progress. Mantle is optional. I would put the tv on a wall mount that can swing out from the wall if needed, off to one side of the stove to keep it cool.

Our XXV is not in the corner, but we had brick put on the wall with an oak mantle above & then got a brick hearth pad to match the brick used on the wall. Looks nice!

A friend has a stone chimney and they put shelves in at different heights on the front & sides & that adds a lot of variety (vs. all at one height).
