Sad day today. I deleted my favorite bookmark. Most days since I got my Tarm more than 3 years ago I did a 24hr search on ebay - HVAC to scan for parts, etc. for my system. Got many really great deals, both new and used, and then sold any excess items I had to buy to get what I wanted.

Well, I deleted that bookmark -- no more looking. My system is operating too well, I am really bored because now all I have to do is fire up and enjoy warmth as the winds and snow blow in -30F and below temps. Don't even need to cut and split any wood until next year, too much on hand.

What's a guy to do? Wife is worn out, Tiger's escapades scared me away from any dallying around, health is good, freezer is full of venison and garden produce, dog is keeping my feet warm. Thought I would start reading the encyclopedia, but ever since I got married, wife knows it all. Was involved a little in politics in the bush era, but with the dems in control, nirvana is just around the corner. Thought about studying religion, but either rome or the evangelicals already have all the answers that don't deal with any of the questions. Was going to do some jogging, but soon snow will seal us in from all contact with the outside world.

What's a guy to do?

What about staying on the forum to answer questions from a inexpericed guy like me? :)

LOL Thats great.

….how about sailing?

Great idea - lake iced over a little over a week ago and should be thick enough now for some great runs.

I know what you mean. My Dad just stopped to look at my system. I have not had a fire since yesterday and still have 180 degrees from the tank. His comment was it's kind of boring not having a fire. I'll just have to spend more time cutting wood.

jebatty take a look at my thread-maybe you could poke some fun. Might lift your spirits-hell you might even laugh a bit. Ive been an evil scientist for 43 freakin years -Give me a hug mwahaaa haaaa haaaaa!

I'll tell you what really occupies much of my time. Archery. Traditional archery. Re-learning to shoot a basic bow and arrow has brought lots of enjoyment to me.

Not many have the courage to admit it when they have reached their personal point of diminishing returns.

I know guys in their late fifties that are still trying to get a little bit more acceleration from their 70's vintage muscle cars.

But don't give up hope. Inquiring minds tend to have new ideas pop up and get them back out to the project to see what happens if they did it 'that way' instead.

But if not, watch out for those sail powered ice skates. If you haven't been on one yet, make sure you fasten the seatbelt. They can accelerate faster than you can grab the jeesus bar.

24/7 glycol based solar assist for your dhw for summer and solar panel system for 24-7 off the grid electrical power supply. Synthetic pelt production from all the oil you are saving and cross culture courses for building authentic looking American Indian Teepees (with the synthetic pelts of course). Or something really challenging like fly fishing through the ice or slolem ski snowmobiling.........................

You now have the time for expanding yourself. Spend time in creative endeavors, art, metal art if you are afraid of being called a fem. Then add to your hunt for interesting authors. And as others have said, write a book, a real novel or a how to book.

How long do you think it might take and what parts might you need to build a wind powered electricity generator. You probably should design two models with one as a building mounted unit and the other as a tower unit. The first goal for output should be enough power to run the Tarm , main pump, zone or fan units as needed.
Sounds like an interesting project to work on. Maybe you should apply for some gov grants to pay for everything .

After reading these posts, my blood is starting to warm again. Will give some thought to these ideas. Fired the boiler this morning, no harm in a warm Tarm.

jebatty - design/install auto feed on that Solo, get over here and let me give you a hand on my install

You are too lucky of a guy! Maybe even get some ice fishing in, or maybe start looking for shed antlers. Where in northern Minn. do you live anyway? I'm already jealous before you answer. Moose sheds are something I always wanted too do. Snare a timber wolf just for fun. ( is that too politically incorrect for this sight? )

Afton Alps? Nearly 200 miles SE of me, plus too easy. Likely will chop a hole in the ice tomorrow to take an early morning swim, if the water is not too warm.

Timber wolves? Took a walk through the woods today. Saw tracks in the snow from a pair of timber wolves. The wolf track paw print was the size of my hand, laid flat, with my fingers together. When I put my hand in the wolf track, I felt shimmering spirits move through me and sensed a blue and brown eye focused on me through the brush. Awesome! A couple of summers ago I spotted a wolf about 200 yards away, body half into the pines and half into a clearing. We stared at each other for at least 10 minutes, neither of us moving our eyes from the eyes of the other - almost a transfusion of spirits between us; then the wolf slowly backed into the pines and disappeared. I still shiver with respect when I think of this experience.

Hey jim, when you chop a whole in the ice, drop a line, don't jump in. You'll enjoy ice-fishing a whole lot more.

Did you ever look for shed antlers?

market a stirling engined pump for OWB that can be used during power failures or for people off the grid. And how about a FHW system that needs no electricity for pumps or thermostats.

I've looked some for sheds, but haven't found any. The neighbor does a better job than I in looking for sheds. Summer of 2008 a nice pair were found by a DNR fireman who was involved in putting out a forest fire on our property. Fire was "negligent wildfire arson," started by some young adults throwing fireworks out of a car window. Lost about an acre of trees. This summer I salvaged to lumber the trees that failed to survive the fire and looked suitable for sawing, and I got 5000 bd ft of white pine lumber, some as big as 18" in width, plus lots of white pine firewood. Not the best firewood, but it burns.

Hate to see those big white pines die Jebatty. Talk about mixed emotions , loosing all those trees but getting firewood too. Kind of like watching your mother in law ride off a cliff, but shes driving your Harley. (an old joke about mixed emotions)
