This is a plastic tube that came extra with a water bottle. I use it to blow off the ashes & expose the best embers for re-kindling after an overnight burn or work. Then, gather some bark, peice of newspaper, blow on the tube...off and going again.
I know bellows accomplish the same thing, but this was small and FREE.
Anyone else do this?

But I see where it could be useful. I just crack the door and go make a sandwich.

Good Pair of gloves. I know they may not be considered a "tool" but when I made a mistake without gloves they quickly became my favorite.
 
Bent poker is our fav tool... freshens up the coals when we use it to pull the coals forward. Be mindful of sparks jumping in your hair if your blowing coals with that tube.

Exactly what I was thinking, dont think I want my face that close to the coals. Long as it works for you
 
With the locust we've been burning, you don't want your face anywhere near the hot coals. I pulled a big chunk of locust to the front of the stove the other day and had to shut the door quickly. My wife and I watched the incredible light show as a fountain of tiny sparks spewed from that log for several minutes. And cherry I just don't trust. It seems to get sap pockets that can explode with quite a punch.
 
I would say it's toss up between my small flat shovel which I use to move wood around like a poker, stir the ashes in the morning and clean out spilled over ashes in the ash drawer . . . that and my small piece of left over slate that I use to adjust the air control so I don't burn my precious little fingers on the hot air control lever.
 
I'm looking for the perfect accessory. A dog that will go to the wood stack, sniff out the driest piece, carefully retreive it, gently carry it inside and set it on the hearth, come over and get a pat on the head and start all over again. I'll train the cat to load the stove.

I'll second on 3: gloves, poker and a cold beer. Is there really anything else you need?...

I use a 2ft. piece of 3/8 inch copper tubing for the same purpose. Works great.
