I got a fire going last night in my HI300. I started off kinda rough (not enough kindling I am thinking) but finally got a good bed of coals going and got my temps up to 450'ish. At around 10:00pm I tossed in three good sized spits for overnight and got them going really well. Once it settled in and secondaries are blazing away, I checked my temps (600-650) and noticed the secondary tubes in the firebox were starting to glow a little red. Is this to be expected?

Yep, mine glow when I get it cranking, usually right before I shut the air down. Don't know if it will affect their life expectancy or not....

Mine glow as well. For the secondaries to be burning the firebox needs to be around the 1000 F range and steel glows just above that, so they are designed to be able to withstand the heat.
Glowing red is fine. The tubes are stainless steel.
It has a melting point of 2781 degrees F.

Not only have I had the secondaries glowing red, I've had the baffles glowing red on occasion as well. Stove top temp was near 700 degrees when this happened.

I have mine placed under the shelf too and can sustain 700 for over an hour with a roaring fire. Especially with BioBricks. That temp is almost a little scary for me so I keep the air opened just the 1/2" and put the fan on high. Not sure if I am sweating from nerves or just from heat!
