As I was cleaning the stove last night, I noticed a small space between the pellet feed tube and fire brick, around the bottom of the tube. In one spot in this same location, there is a little give to the brick. Behind the brick on the metal, I noticed a little discoloration that looks like it might be scorching. Has anyone with the same stove ever experienced that? I'm not sure how concerned to be about this but, just the same, I ordered new bricks last night. We have a real cold snap headed to New England tomorrow and now I'm not sure about burning the stove. I was concerned last week because the hopper wall seemed hot. I measured the temperature with a laser thermometer and, at my normal stove setting, it was around 150 degrees so now I'm wondering if its because of the brick.
 
My fire bricks on my Whitfield Advan II or III (not sure which) seem totally coated on both sides. I scraped the glaze off and actually into the material. The center 'brick' was so stuck that I broke it in 3 pieces getting it out. The stove sure works a lot better, but I think the bricks need replacing. Where can I get them and how often should they be replaced. .........thanks, Collin
 
Can anyone think of a reason that this would be dangerous to run the stove? The bricks are all intact and the gap around the pellet feed tube is about 1/4". I've ordered new bricks but would really like to run the stove before they get here since we're starting the first real cold snap of the winter.

the gases flow up into the heatexchange and then down behind the firebrick so this is normal
just be sure you remove and clean the metal baffle behind the firebrick when you clean
links of photos are in the yellow sticky pages at the top of the pellet room.
 
Thanks for this. I'm happy to say my Advantage doesn't look like those photos. So if the heat flows behind the fire bricks, what is their function? Aesthetics?

thay act as a baffle and ash traps.
 
My hole around the top of the drop tube is prob a 1/2" gap now, from being over 10 yrs old and removed numerous times, $99 is a good deal for new brick, might get it
