Right here is a Craigslist ad that's done the RIGHT way :)

I just bought wood from a vendor in Massachusetts with a similar ad. I emailed to ask him how he would guarantee the quantity, and his reply sold me on it: he stacks it out in his truck. (The previous guy I bought from just dropped the wood into his dump truck, and then delivered after dark. When I stacked it and measured it, he had shorted me by 20%. Of course that guy didn't return any phone calls and won't get my business again)

The honest vendor I bought from is named Dennis Brown, [email protected].
When he got here to deliver, the first thing he did was to fix the stack and take out a tape measure for me to look at.
He advertised "green" wood for $200/cord delivered, but what he brought was a lot dryer than I expected.

I bought a load from a guy on craigslist who had a picture of a box he built on his trailer that measured out at 4x4x8 and a picture of the wood stacked tight in the box. The ad said 2 year seasoned oak, beech and maple, just like you see it $175. I called him and he showed up on time, I looked in the box and it looked exactly like the ad, stacked in tightly.

He and his wife refused my help unloading it, didn't say boo when I split a few pieces to check the moisture and they banged them together as they unloaded to make sure they had no junky pieces on accident. The coup de grace...I got an e-mail the next day thanking me for my business, assuring me they had plenty of wood should I need anymore, and asking if it would be ok to add me to their list to contact next year.

Nice to see a young couple who know how to do business. Guess who I'll buy wood from next year if I need to?

I saw an ad the other day that promised to bring a moisture meter with them to verify that the wood was good to burn and not green. 1st time I saw anything like that

Around here I swear they split the wood on the way here.

All I can say is WOW!

WOW!

For $120 a full cord of cut / split hardwood, I'd prolly buy it around here even if it was green! I'm lucky if I can get a 1/2 a cord for that price, of mixed junk wood to boot.

Dad and I got lucky earlier this year and found a guy selling red oak (green) for $25 a face cord. He would fell, buck, split, and help load it for that price. I have no idea how in the world he earned any money that way after gas/oil/bar lube/time, etc. But needless to say, we got as much as we could get from him. Two years from now I'll pull that stuff out of the drafty ole hay barn and keep the wife and kids cozy. :cheese:

I saw an add on craigslist once the guy was selling quarts of wood, i figured maybe he just screwed up and misspelled it then i read the advertisement and he repeated quart 4 more times. The onslaught of replies was amazing, one guy asked if he could get a gallon of wood, The OP told him that wood came in quarts there was no such thing as a gallon of wood. After a bout to replies he finally figured out he should be selling cords of wood

After several dozen 'customers' who call ya back to say they're 'short' after making some of it disappear, or who want to play the game of 'just tell him you'll pay less, he won't want to take it all back after alll that work'. That sounds like a great way to do it. Too much work, but probably solves any hassles. Pay before dumping.

A friend's business failed - in part due to the economy, in part - crappy partners, so he's doing landscaping work.
He stacked a cord, then threw it all in the truck to get a eyeball of what a cord looks like.


I've gone with him three times now to stack a "shorted" dump to show some a-hole what a cord is.
Just so they don't get a free stack job (live and learn) we back into the stack and knock it over.
Feels good, too.


With two people, one can yack and the other can go for wandering walk.
"Missing wood" usually isn't too far away.



Grass isn't any greener on the other side of the fence.

Years ago I was doing some locksmithing and got a call to open a car door that had the keys locked inside. I had a flat rate that was based on my average travel distance so it was about equal to the guy taking a taxi home to get spare keys.

Anyway, it took me all of about 3 seconds to open the car and the ash hoe refused to pay me for what saw as 3 seconds of work so I tossed the keys back inside the car and locked the car door.
