has anyone made a small woodfired kiln, or kicked the idea around? I've got some wet oak on my hands and some time so why not?
I plan to make a solar kiln next summer.

You mean a wood fired- wood drying kiln I assume. There are at least 2 of us here that have made wood fired pottery kilns.

Wood fired wood drying kiln??? That's just sick and wrong. :-/ :cheese:

not really I would burn off all my punky and crappy wood to get my oak ready to burn before 2011/2012. I just sold the wood stove with blower that I was going to use for my kiln. I think it would be a cool experiment. What could possibly go wrong?

I have made a wood fired kiln inside of my pole barn, the room is about 12' X 20' and holds 2 full cords of firewood, I use a large woodstove and burn about 1/3 of a cord a week to heat the room, with temperatures ranging from 120-145 degrees, depending on ambient temperature. I normally can't dry it fast enough for customers needs. I stack the wood in boxes I have made and can move them around with a pallet jack. It usally takes about a week for each load.

That's an interesting setup! Do you start with wood that was just split and mostly green?

those are huge, way bigger than I was thinking. I would probably max out at 1 pallet at a time. I would only be drying my personal stash and doing it as a fun project.

Yes, I usually cut up and process the wood as my supplier brings it. I will take some pictures of the actual kiln and post them.

thanks looking forward to viewing your setup
