Is the half way point in the heating season/wood usage point still in the middle of January (my memory is horrible). IF so how is everyone doing on the wood usage end of it with the gassers. This is my second year with the Tarm and I am starting to think I am using a lot less wood this year than last. I live in upstate NY not sure how our winter has been compared to last year; to me cold is cold, and thats as far as I usually go with it. Last year went through 19 plus face cords through the end of the season and I am barely into 6 so far this year probably closer to 5 face to date.

Anecdotally I would say we've had enough warm days to push the mid point closer to the End of January this year. Of course, that depends on how the rest of the season goes :)

January 15 is the date I consider to be the mid-point. I have to admit I'm doing better in my second year also. Everybody said you will burn less wood as you gain experience.

The halfway point is based on degree days. I think we are getting near the halfway point with these cold days and nights.
Much of central Maine is about 8000 DD. That number moves around depending on how warm you want to keep your house.
The annual DD data usually averages out, so if we have a hot or cold spell early, it corrects later on in the season.

Happy New Year!

If we are getting close to the halfway point in the heating season, then I am doing better than I thought. I am about 1/3 the way thru my wood.

Last week we had a spell of near zero days, with 20-40mph winds which just suck the heat out of my house and I kept my boiler cranking 18 hours a day just to keep up with demand..if that weather kept up, I'd definitely would have run out of wood early....

I'm in deep trouble with my boiler. I'm burning about one rack a week and the racks are 6' long by 42" deep by 40" high filled to over flow. Ouch this Adobe is killing me.

Not sure where the mid-point of heating season is for my area but right now I'm going through ~70lbs of wood with a moisture content of 20% per day. Since my wood consists of cherry, elm, oak, and maple I find that weighing the amount of wood used is a far more accurate way to record wood usage.

WOW, half a cord a week of any species is a lot unless you are heating a large area.
