I have had this stove for two years and just a few weeks ago the insert smokes when opening the door. I tried re cleaning the flue liner only got a small amount of klinker out of it. But it still smokes when opening the door. Now this year we had an addition added to the main floor and I think this causes a back draft. The addition is about 600 sq ft and only heated to 50* at this time, it also has a vent fan in the bathroom. I think this is the cause of my troubles the question is how do I solve the issue of the draft? Eventually the new room could be sealed off but it is my bedroom and the insert can heat that also. When it is completed and up to temperature will this solve the problem? Sorry for the long post but I would like to get answers before the construction is over and the construction crew leaves.

The bathroom fan shouldn't be an issue unless it's running every time you open the door.
If your addition has created a negative pressure situation, then youre' gonna hafta open a window,
SOMEWHERE, to change the pressure.
If you have can-type, recessed lighting in the addition, that could be the cause...

I have good draft but occaisionally get a little backpuff when I open the stove door too quick. That big door pulls on the smoke. I recommend opening your primary air control to full a few seconds before opening your door. Also, if opening to reload, you shouldn't have much smoke at all in your firebox. Should be hot coals. Are you opening the door in the early or mid stages of a burn?

Sounds like it might be a marginal flue. Can you describe the flue connection on the stove? Interior or exterior chimney? Lined? How tall?

No can lighting but the other room has no heat on.

Six inch flexible liner with hard connections coated with black fire cement inside a 11" Flue, inside with all sides open, surrounded by 6 tons of stone 22' high.
Still think the new addition is the culprit especially as it is not heated yet. The addition doesn't even have functioning electric as of today. The wife pointed out that the construction drape was blowing toward the addition. Can't be air leaks as the entire thing was shot with expandable insulation!

Can we assume that when the liner was cleaned that the job went smoothly, no snags of forcing of the brush? Was the cap cleaned at the time?

An easy test for the bath vent would be to tape a sheet of plastic over the vent temporarily. If that doesn't make a big difference, another test would be to tape a large sheet of plastic over the entrance to the addition. If the stove behavior dramatically improves, then this could be the issue.

Where was the addition put on in relationship to the house, same floor? How is the addition roof (attic?) vented?

My 550 only ever smoked on me after running some really wet wood through it. It was screaming to be cleaned and the cap was actually 50% plugged. I cleaned it and do my best to burn only seasoned wood.
