I have an older Jotul 602 that puts out a lot of heat. There is no built in flue damper so I use a stove pipe damper. My sister has a new Jotul F3 that dosent put out as much heat. It burns bright and looks great. It has a built in flue damper. I am wondering if a stove pipe damper would improve the heat output? We burn the same firewood that is spilt small and is well seasoned. Thanks, Danny

I went to a stove shop this fall with the same question. I have a PE Vista that was burning great but the stack temps I thought to be a little too high. I first checked here and with a couple searches found the info I wanted and took it to the local stove shop. At first the shop owner said I didn't need one but then when I told him my stack height and temps he said to put a damper in. Putting that damper in made a world of difference in that the stove put more heat into the house and the stack had reasonable temps aswell.

To my knowledge, the basic F3 doesn't have a flue damper. Is this a catalyst model (3TDC)? If so, the catalyst might be plugged or need replacing.

There is no catalyst. Its a brand new stove. The stove has a damper (slider) at the bottom for combustion air and a damper (slider) at the top that restricts the flue gasses but even when that is closed and the door is open the stove dosent smoke.

A new F3CB had the start air control on the door. This is virtually worthless from my experience. One gets much better results by leaving the door slightly open until the fire has started. The upper control is for the primary air. There is no bypass on this stove.

Not that I disagree about the flue damper in some cases. We had one and used it always with our 602. The damper helped keep this eager heater from taking off. When we had the F3CB on the same flue we also used it, but with less obvious results as compared to the 602.
