I have not ben on in a while. I have ben busy building my family a new house. I decides to cut the cord and build off the grid. I built a super efficient 1500 sq ft 3 beadroom house. Designed to heat with one blaze king in the center. We just moved in and all is working well. We have reliable power, hot water, and a toasty warm house. I load the king 2 times a day. I have 20 acres of nice trees. The bedrooms are finished. The living room is a work in progress. Here is a pic of my stove install.

Now that is a proper throne for a king...well done.

I am a Blaze King Ultra owner /fan as well...did you pipe outside (fresh air kit) to your King?

Are those 2x4 walls? With no insulation yet. How are you going to make them super efficient? How do you heat your water? Very fascinating and the BK is the only stove that can do it.

They look more like 2x6 on 24" centers, which has more room for insulation. I'm curious about what look like 2x4s on flat on the ceiling??

How warm are you staying, without insulation in yet? Yoicks!

The stove and surround look great, WK, it looks like it's placed well into the room, with sort of a hallway behind the stove?

Show us more photos of the house, please! And the woodpiles, of course.

The ceiling looks like beams that you are only seeing the bottoms of as the space between the beams looks like it is filled with insulation (you see this a lot in old homes). Also, the walls look thick. Almost like the plywood you see on the wall is covering something up (insulation?).

+ plus one on the insulation questions.
Good going being able to do a house off grid. Next opportunity I get to build a house I am going to do the same thing.

I am sure Wolf has strapped ridged insulation on the outside, the 2 by 6 inside has been left open to complete the electrical install, backing etc... then it will be insulated. The strapped insulation on the outside is probably better than most southern homes. The ceiling is also strapped with foilback ridged to reflect the heat down. It can also have blown in insulation above that. Thats my guess any how, as my home was done this way. Lookin all good. ;-)

I love this place................nothing gets missed & explained!

Outside air kit??

Very nice!

I can't wait to hear the details....Very Interested & hope you have pictures.

Side note: I saw a TV show where a 3000sq ft home in Denmark had walls that were 2 feet thick, :bug: and packed with insulation. Geothermal heat cost the home owner $15 USD per month!

Cheers,Hiram

I'm really curious about going off-grid!

What method are you using for generating electricity?

Also... I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see more pics! Maybe some of the outside of the house and maybe the scenery?

Maybe means it is always dark outside this time of year so no real good outside pics are possible. As I understand it there is some low light around noon though.

You don't have to build a new house to go off grid - just stop paying your power bill.

Well were to start. The insulation is done in the pics. The system I used is called remote wall. It is 2x4 construction, there is ice and water shield on the outside of the wall for vapor barrior, then 3 layers of 2" ridged. This gives me a r-28 wall with no cold transfer and no voids. The ceiling is framed with 12" BCIs. there is 12" fiberglass bats in the joists. Then I put 2" of ridged underneath and 2x4 purlins to hold it up. The purlins also make a nice space to run electrical without having to cut insulation or vapor barrior. The roof system also has 2x4 purlins on top to create air for the cold roof. I heated this house to +70 with a toyo stove until I installed the king. It burned 1 gal of heating oil a day. There are no cold spots or drafts in the house.

I have a xantrex 4000 wat inverter for power. It is hooked up to 20 l-16 batteries. I am charging the batteries with a generator this winter. I will put up a wind mill next summer. I use a renai on demand propane water heater. I use a propane cook stove. I have a 1/2 hp well pump and a 100 foot well. The pump runs fine off the inverter. I use a electric refrigerator and electric lights. We also use electric waser and dryer but only whaen runing the generator to charge batteries. I can go a week without charging the batteries if I am conservative.

The shortest day still has 3.5 to 4hrs of daylight. Usually clear, sunny and cold.

I've never been there in the winter but I've been told that in Alaska there is a part of the year when the sun never rises and you only get a dawn/dusk situation. Is that not true? 4 hours a day of sunlight is only half of what we get here in WA.
