Thanks for any help, I have a pellet stove and we have not been using our furnace. I am hoping to buy a freestanding stove for my basement to heat the basement and supplement the upstairs a little (I was able to get a bunch of firewood too).

I thought of the idea when I went to my father in laws house, he hooked a wood stove into the flue to his furnace.

My furnance, which we don't use, goes into the wall with a 10 inch hole (and then up the chimney). I was thinking of getting a free standing wood stove and disconnecting the furnace and sticking the 6 inch flue into the furnace flue and up a few feet so I can use a wood stove.

I know I could run into issues with getting a good draw of air, and I know the stove liner would be hot (it would be exposed to the open air before going into the furnace liner) but doesn anyone else think this is crazy?

thanks

probably can't do it. wood gas pellet... they all take different chimneys based on heat, size, etc.

Do you know what your current chimney setup is? Size, materials, interior or exterior, etc. If nothing else, it might be easy (but not cheap) to get it relined with something a wood stove could use. depends on size and structural makeup.

thanks.

The existing flue (10 inches) is metal, but I imagine it could not handle the heat of a wood stove, so I was hoping to put a flue inside of that one (only going up part of the way) and having the first few feet (hottest part) of stove pipe exposed to the open air.

nope, you'd probably need to do a complete insulated liner from stove to roof+
