I've been reading about wood burning stoves and I wished I knew about them before we had our house built. The builder installed a Lennox direct vent fireplace in our new home. Is there any way to replace this fireplace with something like a Clydesdale Wood Burning Insert 8491? If not, what needs to be done to accomplish this?

I assume those pictures are old. I believe you need new pipe and clearances need to be changed. Probably 2-5k in work. Depending on what you do yourself.

Depending on the brand and size of insert, you can't have combustibles within a certain distance. Without knowing the measurements your vertical columns will probably be too close. I assume they are combustible.

Thanks for the replies. I have added dimensions to the picture.

gzecc - Yes the columns are combustable.

choppedliver - That is exactly what I want to do, start over. Does the entire area surrounding the fireplace have to go though?

It looks to me it would be easier to tear out to the outside wall, then put in a freestanding wood stove. easily doable yourself if you are a bit handy. you wouldn't even effect your rooms footprint really, since they built that big chase to house the fireplace.
