Feeling the Heat

I stacked three of those approximately 8' x 4' x 2' wood racks around 12/27 and see that my rack full of the smallest splits is nearly gone. I'm guessing that I might be running around a 1/4 cord per week. Does that sound right? Too much? Too little?

I'd say about 2/3's that for me, -20 and I really let er bark!!

I have easily burned 2 cords this year and didn't really get going till into November. But since we started, it has been downright cold and we have been burning a lot.

Sounds like 2/3 a cord per month... right?

DavidV ... you sound like you are burning about a cord per month? (Same as me I think.)

It's been below zero quite a bit lately, so I've burned about 1/6 of a cord in the last week. I have a big stove and a small house. There are a lot of variables though, so what one guy burns in a week might be way different than somebody else.

I seem to remember the third week in January is the halfway point. Most people burn 3.5-5 cords in an epa stove. I think I will be thru 2 cords by then, maybe a little more. Plan on a cord a month in the winter and you will always end up ok.

1/3 of a cord. If your house was warm and your stove was operating properly, 1/4 cord was right.

Over the last week we have had more hours at 0 deg. f. and below than we have had 0 deg. f. and above. To keep my 2500 sq. ft. + house at 68 deg. f. I must have burned at least a 1/4 cord - maybe close to 1/3. For comparison, I only burned about 3 1/2 cords last year for the entire heating season burning 24/7.

We burn approx 6.5 - 7 cords each year, 24/7, using an pre-epa stove. We're about 1 1/2 to 2 wks or so out from being half way through our supply.

Above normal temps here. Hit 55 today. Hardly burned at all, just a few fires in the early part of the week.

The past two weeks burning 24/7 and fighting old man winter, temps have been in the single digits at night and i have been running the stove hard to keep the house toasty, I like my house 75 degrees and in order to keep the house at temps like this you have put the wood to the stove, but i don't mind. I don't buy any of my wood , I have been blessed to find lots of wood i guess thats one good thing about living right in the mountains of eastern kentucky.

Just under 1/4 cord/week here. Wood is a mix collected last spring and early summer from various CL postings - folks getting rid of bits here and there that was already seasoned. Been burning pretty hard I think but not crazy hard as we have been able to keep the place to our liking for the most part. Single digits at night it does cool down a bit though so we do play catchup in the mornings which means first load goes faster than the rest of the day - that one really gets the cat glowing, probably not a very efficient burn. I suppose I could stay up later or get up earlier to feed the stove but I'm just not that dedicated.

I've burned through almost 4 cords. We never turn on the oil furnace! We went from spending $1,400 in oil last year to $200 this year, We may have used a lot of wood with 2 inefficient stoves but it was worth every bit not to turn on the furnace. However, I'll be getting a more efficient stove to heat most of our 1,760 ft2 home with less wood next year,

Took this picture on 1/04/10. The partial stack on the left is now gone except for about 2 days of it remaining in the house.
That stack is 8'x4'x16-18"ish, or otherwise affectionately known as a face cord. 3 more directly behind it the same size, and the 4 to the right of it are all 9'x4'x16-18"ish. About 2 more up by the porch.
To answer the ?, I've used about 1/6 cord in the past week. Pretty much on track for my monthly average, but the average may go down a little since I usually figure almost a full cord each for the months of Jan., & Feb.
Guess I'm doing pretty good, considering all the cold we've had.

3 cords since November and burning 24/7. Even though I have to buy wood and was ripped off 2 times on wood (one so bad their 1/2 cord lasted me 4 days) I'm still a bit ahead of what my oil bill would have been plus I'm 5-15 degrees warmer all the time and enjoy running the stove.

We're burning about 1/6 cord per week, but that's with the gas boiler firing up at least once a day (on a timer thermostat, and it kicks on around 6am when the fire is down to small coals). We've had 10 straight days of nighttime temps in 10s.

Of the 2 cords I had at Thanksgiving, down to about 1/2 cord of the original left. The wood I bought in December won't be ready until next year, so at this rate I'll be out by the end of January.

I've seen some neighbors with old wood stacks out in the yard and no fires burning, so maybe I'll ask if they'd like me to take the unwanted wood off their hands.

Too damned much. :coolsmirk:

I heard that. Last week made my back hurt i carried so much wood single digits all week day and night in ohio.

every bit i had saved starting in november last year
i love white oak
burnt it as fast as i could in a record winter here last week
gas furnace hardly ran
on the week end, i could feed the stove fast enough to keep the furnace off entirely
first year with the stove...love it
comfort level in the house @ 0F is epic
done burning this winter :long:

burned two cords so far this year, 1 1/4 left. I'm gonna run out. May have to borrow some or go with bio bricks.

I burn enough to keep warm. ;-)

Varies a lot. Many factors play into it like temp. outside and what kind of wood I am burning and how often I reload - which depends on how my day is scheduled.

Right now I would have to go with about 1/5 cord a week. I am feeding the stove more often and playing catchup in the morning unless I get up and put wood in the middle of the night. There is a warm spell coming here so I can slow her down again tomorrow.

Burning 24/7, used the furnace for 1/2 hour on 2 occasions and keeping the house (2900 sq ft) @74 degrees. I have gone through 3 cords. Been burning for thirteen weeksthat would be a little under a face cord a week.

P.S.: got our gas bill 12/4 - 1/10 = $31.00 we have a gas water heater.

less than half what i did the week before. Switched from 2 big old stoves to a single Englander. Temperature in the house went up almost 10 degrees and wood consumption dropped over half. I was really worried about burning thru all my wood by the end of January, now it looks like we'll be fine.

"What kind of old stoves did you have?"
