Long Island
Just installed my new brown enamel Lopi Leyden pellet stove. So far we love it. Any suggestions to get it burning the best? Also any suggestions for the best available pellet in the Long Island area? My house has never been warmer and my boiler has only kicked on to heat the water.

Welcome to the Crib!! I can't advise you on operation of the Lopi but it sounds like you are on the right track. I feel the same way about the heat from my stove and also my boiler only kicks in to heat hot water. I use programmable thermostats and it took a while to coordinate them between the pellet stove and the boiler.

Try to post a couple of pictures as we like to see how others have installed their stove (and exhaust system)!

if you can post some pics and show us all the new stove......enjoy the new found heat

Gold Coast Flooring in Hicksville. Barefoot Pellets only! No other dealer in area can compete with the quality pellet and the price! Good Luck and post some pics. macman on the forum always suggests pics...

Drekick1,

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the forum. Lots of nice people here.

We are very happy with our lopi Leyden

We are using a wired programmable thermostat with our Lopi, a Ritetemp from Home Depot, and it works great.

As "Krooser" and many others would advise, keep your stove clean. I use a Loveless hot ash vacuum and do a quick 5 minute clean of the burn pot and inside ( without removing any baffles) once a day. You can do that with a hot ash vac as soon as the automatic fan stops upon shut down.

I like to see the fire, so also do a quick glass cleaning with Ruttland "White Off". Glass has to cool before using.

I do a more thorough cleaning weekly by removing the upper baffle plates, and once a month remove the inner side and back plates, plus some inner sheet metal baffles and vacuum. Vacuum out the ash pan.

The owner's manual gives excellent cleaning instructions and photos.

I also like to screen the pellets to remove fines and sawdust.

What brand of pellets are you using? Have had good luck with LG Granules, Barefoot, Okanagans, and Lignetics hardwood ( last year's ).

The clean out T gets the cap removed and cleaned out every ton or so. Don't get much ash there, just like to be sure.

There are a few members with Lopi Leydens who post regularly and I am sure they will have some good tips.

Gotta go vacuum the stove.

Regards,

Ranger

P.S. As Macman says, "No pictures, it didn't happen" :)

drekick1, welcome to the forum! The Leyden is a nice stove.

Keep us up-to-date on how it's running, and as others have mentioned above, WE NEED PICS! LOL

Thanks for the comments. I will post pictures soon. Fellow Leyden owners. What heat and fan settings are you using? Right now I am using pellets I bought at Loews. They seem to be giving off too much ash. I will call Gold Coast to see about getting some Barefoot. Anyone else like these pellets?

drekick1,

Have been running the Lopi Leyden's stove heat output on the first medium heat setting ( two green and one yellow light showing) and the fan on the lowest setting.

We have an average size for this area ( 26" x 34" with a 12' x 16' ell ) center chimney Cape Cod . The stove is in the center of the house in an open living dining area that takes about 1/2 of the main part of the house.

Starting each year about December, we also run a fire in the wood boiler in the morning and evening ( start a fire and let it burn out). The wood boiler is connected in parallel with the oil boiler, and when running, will also heat the domestic hot water. Has to be below 20 degrees to run the wood boiler or it is just too hot.

I have been officially nominated as a "Heat HOG" by fellow forum members.

What brand pellets did you get at Lowes?

The Barefoots are really good pellets, but can be pricey. Maybe Medreach found a place on the island that has them at a reasonable price?

drekick1,
You have a few choices on LI....But the quality is limited to a few good suppliers...

Best pellet deal if your not going to burn ACP (appling county pellets) that are poor quality....is the Barefoots...

Lowes you probably paid $5.96 per bag...

Barefoots are going for $280 per ton with FREE delivery. no minimum of ton quantity...

Go to Craigslist and do a search on Long Island area for wood pellets. You'll find a few there. If you can find Greene Team at Lowes try them they are not to bad of a pellet from a big box store.

Good Luck and stove looks good fellow Long Islander!

American Wood Fibers

I've burned the AWF, and they seemed like decent pellets. even if you have to clean some extra ash, the bottom line is heat output. If they burn hot, and the price is good, stay with them.

AWF and Barefoots on Long Island are the same price $280 per ton...what would most pellet pigs burn...Barefoots!!!

WOW...that's expensive for the AWF. Even for the Barefoots it's somewhat high, but since they are the same price, go Barefoots all the way!!

You gotta remember its Long Island...Nothing is cheap...$280 is considered cheap even with the overflow of pellets here on Long Island

Beautiful stove and a nice neat install.

Another vote for the Barefoots. your stove will love them and they burn HOT!!

Enjoy,

My mother-in-law had the Leyden. Very nice stove. It's her third stove and by far the best one she has owned. Being the guy who maintains it here is what I have found.

There are some very tight exhaust chambers on this stove. The stove needs to have lots of air, so make sure that the manual draft setting is set correctly. This setting changes over time as ash build up within the exhaust chambers starts to increase. A good setting for a clean stove is all of the way in, then out an inch and 3/4. Adjust the draft outward as the stove become dirtier. A good visual test should provide an agressive white hot dancing flame on high with the fire just shy of the top plate.

I clean her stove twice a year because she is just brutal. She works at a Lowes so she gets great buys on ripped bags of pellets. This has to be the worst possible way to run the machine but her Lopi's seem to handle it well.

Thanks for all the help. I have been burning through pellets like crazy. Last nigt I filled it at about 9:30, the stove heat was on the first medium and the fan was on the second low. It ran out of pellets by 6am. I think I have my restictor out to far. Does this make sense?

drekick1, are you running on manual or automatic? The restrictor on my stove is barely out, these stoves seem to produce so much air that it's almost shut off. I have no furnace at this time so this is all I have for heat. On weekends, I set mine at the second highest heat setting, and blower on high, in manual mode. When it heats up to her (wifes) temp. I turn down heat to med. (2 green, 1 yellow). Running man. all day I will go thru 2 full bags exactly, in 24 hours. During the week when my heat sponge is at work, I run stove on auto. with programable t-stat, set up to run low heat when we're gone and fire up good just before she gets home. During the week we go thru 1 1/2 bags in 24 hour period.

Adjust your stove restriction so you have a white dancing flame, no higher than the fire brick (on high). The more air your get the less orange or red the flame will be. A typical setting is about 1" out, maybe less. These models have a really good impeller/ draw system.

Thanks Medreach. Just ordered a ton of Barefoots from Gold Coast. I will play with the restrictor when I get home. I am running on manual right now. Need to figure this out. I don't think I should burn through a bag overnight.

I want to install the thermostat to the stove. The picture in the manual dosn't show where the circuit board is. It only shows how to quick connect. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
