I let the fire go out today and decided to do a thorough mid-winter cleaning. While scraping the ashes into the grate, my shove pulled up this odd black T shaped piece of iron. Is it a cover for the bricks that line the rear floor of the firebox? This T piece does not screw in and I can't remember paying much attention to it when I bought it. Any thoughts? Stove is working fine since cleaning it out, I just replaced it back where it can from after brushing the ashes out.

Also, anyone have good techniques/advice for cleaning the glass on the Shelburne other than just using hot water?

I'm going back to load some free 2 year dry red oak into the stove. Going to be a cold one tonight.

Not sure about the "T" because I'm not familiar with the stove. As for cleaning the glass on my stove, I take some of the very fine ash from the stove and mix it in a bowl with water to make a paste. Next I wet a piece of newspaper and apply the paste to the glass making sure to rub it all over not missing any area of the glass. Next I take a piece of dry newspaper and wipe away the paste. I have found this works the best. The stove door is of coarse cool at this time. Happy burning!

I think that could be a weight designed to hold down the insulation blanket above the baffle. Not for sure how your stove is setup.

That piece just lays in the back to connect the back two firebricks so there is no gap between them, well atleast thats what i think it is. And to clean the glass, Wet a paper towel and dip it into the ash and then just wipe it down. After the heavy stuff comes off wipe it clean with another paper towel it will look good as new. When i first read about the ash trick i didnt beieve it but it is the best method i have tried so far.

I just crank the stove up. Wham glass is mostly clean. the rest comes off easy with windex.

Please post a photo of your stove...I have a Shelburne on order, but have only seen the one photo in the Hearthstone brochure.

I was sort of wondering the same thing!? Doesn't seem to have much of a function, except for what Stoph was saying.

Stoph: Love the enamel on your stove! That was the color we were going to get, but the wife wanted the green and it was on sale...
