Just finished a ton of NEWP, messy pellet and lots of clinks. Graduated to Dragon Mountain, nice hot burn, no clinks still a little messy but a finer mess, but learning that they all get messy.

Is that really a clinker or are you just messing with us cc?

Up to some of krooser's tricks maybe? I'll bet thats a meteor.
.......
....alright you got me..... :cheese: .............. was just messin around........ took that one out of the service manual as their example of a 'large' clinker....... as you know I am partial to 'clinkers' and all so couldn't resist posting it.......I sure am glad i never had to pull that one out of the pot or I'd be using my pellets for driveway gravel...... ha......cc

If I had a bigger fire pot I could have produced an even larger one. I had all of the proper conditions last season when I started burning pellets. I got plenty of heat it just required far more effort than needed to get it. I haven't seen even a small one this season. Now if you want to really talk clinkers you should see what can come out of burning coal.

CC, If you want to beat the Bear at a clinker, You might need to cheat some. Try running 50/50 pellets/corn mix and see what you get. I tried that mix with my Quad and had success, But needed a jack hammer to clean the pot. As Eric would say don't try this if the stove and vent are not corn rated. Use of inappropriate fuel voids warrenty and homeowners insurance

Jay, Didn't they warn you about needing some oyster shell when you use corn? It is just like raising eggs without the girls getting plenty of calcium, sort of makes a mess of things.

Even with calcium, Its a very hard mass you need to remove. I think its how you mix in the calcium. Much easier to have a mixer, stirrer, or agitator in the burn pot. Makes life so much easier to handle. Would I still add calcium? Yes I would. It does help matters.

For me, I need to empty my pot twice a day to avoid clinkers. Yes I'm using Tree Cycle, can't wait for them to run out. They don't produce much heat. Barefoot here I come!

The Tree Cycle pellets seem to have dirt in the pellets that is turning to glass in the fire pot making the coral like clinker. They use ground up stumps to make the pellets. I am going to call them up and let them know because we have had some complaints about them. The self cleaning stoves seam to handle them but I get a softball sized clinker after 8 hours of burning the tree cycle.

Sounds like if you burn that particular pellet you need a http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-D55146...ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1263651874&sr=1-3 attached to your burn pot and set to fire every half hour or so.

I stand corrected and apologize to Tree Cycle. I should have called and talked with them instead of trying to figure it out on my own. Tree Cycle DOES NOT use stumps in the pellet process. It is listed on the web site as a source of material but the stumps are used for the mulch line! They have worked on the process to correct the clinker problem and the new pellets should be rolling out soon. Lesson learned. Call and find out before posting.

TreeCycle 3rd Generation pellets are really good pellets !!!! The first batch of which I had 4 tons (returned / exchanged) burned poorly with at least 2 (large) clinkers per 40 pound bag, The second batch not much better...... 3rd batch is real good...... I will agree with the fellow that said the clinkers appeared to be made up of burned dirt or sand.... Anyway.... TreeCycle seems to have the formula dialed in pretty good now........

These are exactly the type of clinkers I'm getting with the TreeCycles. I wish I didn't have to run through the rest of the ton with this issue but live and learn I guess. I'm sick and tired of running into these types of problems every year. Next year I'm buying the best I can afford. I'm also sick and tired of the "Premium" stamp companies roll out on the bags when they clearly aren't "Premium".

Yeah. that "Premium" tag getting a little old. I called Tractor Supply last week and asked which brand they had, reply was we have Hardwood Heat on the floor but I don't know what is out back wrapped up. So I drove there and they had three bags of HH (bagged under the TSC name) on the floor in the back. I asked what else he had and he said "Premium" pellets. You should have seen the look I got when I said, "Yeah, that's what they all say on the bag". So off to Lowes I go for the $4.36 per bag AWF. Better the devil you know....

I bought the Treecycles to try and support the local company/economy somewhat. They seemed ok when I first started burning them but not so great now. The real kicker is that I could have bought Turmans for $5-10 a ton more that what I bought the TC's for. Like I said....live and learn.

RE: TreeCycle / Clinkers..... I would call and request a swap out....... They are really nice and are aware of the clinker issue..... I have burned a ton of the "3rd Batch" and the super clinker issue is fixed..... They want your business and want you to be satisfied...... They changed out my pellets and I also got a tour.......... I have a much better understanding of how pellets are made.......

What exactly causes "clinkers"?

I seem to get 'em when I don't eat enough fiber!

Don't lead him astray - A faulty flux capacitor is almost always the culprit.

Different things can cause them. Corn likes to make them due to the sugars left over after burning the corn. Tree Cycle made them due to dirt turning to glass from the high heat. I am guessing that if sugar maple was used as material for pellets it would make them due to the sugar also.

I'm getting very large clinkers from the Treecycles I'm currently burning. I've been burning a bag or two here and there of Firesides and Winter Wamth (which I love) and haven't had any clinkers with those two brands. I got a dirty burn from the Firesides but no clinkers. I burned a bag of Somersets a while ago but didn't get any clinkers with it...was a bit ashy though. It might just be the pellets. Can you get a hold of any other "premium" brand?

Finally had time to go pick up those NEW TREECYCLE Pellets Mike promised.
I have to say Mike is a stand up guy & good for His Word.
Not too many people good for their word these days…

He has made a better product with this batch I have.
Mike mentioned He “just now” pulled in some new high quality wood suppliers!
So expect even another jump up in quality in the coming batches once
delivery from their new suppliers commences.

I burned a few bags.
Pellets not have the problems of the 9-09 bag dated batch.
Especially the ash at the end of my burn pot does not get all linked together
creating a "wall" that wont allow ash to drop of the end.
So they do burn cleaner & hotter!
My Employee even said they smell & Burn better without asking Him.
I will post a more detailed explanation of how they are.
However They are of a quality now that I would buy.
I actually cant wait till their newer wood suppliers batches get run!
Mike wants to get a few bags to me to try.

The bags I have now are dated 10-09.
However the Pellets were just recently run.
The bags were dated at time of their manufacture.
So can’t go by the date.
Mike is trying to get a better dating system going.
May even change the look of the bag…

If Mike keeps weeding out the suppliers that were “tainting” the quality of the wood they were sending
& keeps pulling in these quality suppliers the NEWEST TREECYCLE Pellets could be a product
that could compete with the best of them.
I hope to see them get there.
Would be fantastic to see a local company succeed providing local jobs.

Sincerely,
LEN
