Where do I get my true temp ?

I have the regency F2400 and I'm trying to find the right place to get my temp readings from. I see a difference if I move it up or down on my first single wall pipe.

The gauge I purchased is magnetic and it says to place it 18" from the top of the stove. Now I know EPA stoves and regular stoves are different and from what I understand my flu temps will be lower being a EPA stove. So do I change the location of my temp gauge ? I want to start monitoring temps and try different woods but I want it to be as accurate as I can be.

I don't see crap in the manual about temp area's or I'm blind "this is sometimes possible"

Any EPA guru's here ? Or is there a standard location ?

The temp gauge has one line of directions. "place 18" from top of stove" WOW, crazy detail !!!
 
By the way, after a good fire up and damped down I seem to cruse at 375 to 400 according to the gauge. It also shows 300-550 as a safe range.

375 to 400 low even for a EPA with secondary running ? Also I have a blower running on high and automatic "factory"

Seems low to me.
 
These are surface temps on the flue, correct? If so, they appear ok. Maybe even a bit high if the interior flue temps are 1.5 times higher. Our stove runs between 400 and 600 for average flue temps measured with a probe thermometer on double wall pipe.
 
Flue is the small collar on the stove right ? I'm measuring off the single wall pipe 18" above the stove. The flue is 4" off the stove. So I'm 14" above the flue.

Is the flue what I should measure ? Sorry, I'm trying to get the hang of this......lol

Sure, you're in the right spot. Won't see much difference a few inches up or down the pipe, maybe +/- 50º. The thermometer's probably not that accurate anyway, just a point of reference you use to see how your burn is going. I agree with BeGreen, seems just about perfect to me. Wish I could get my non-EPA stove to cruise in that range. Even with the driest of dry wood, mine wants to drop below 300º after a couple of hours burn time.
 
So I seem to be ok.... I'm going to inspect the pipe in a month to see how the burn is outside of theory ;) The stove seems to perform well, good secondary burn and the new pipe made all the difference. The glass is always clean.

I like different tools to watch and know everything is normal.

Well then, seeing how you're using single wall pipe, get yourself an IR thermometer. That will tell you everything you need to know about every square inch of your stove's surface.
 
Thank for the info, I just didn't know if there was an area you use in general. I see everyone reporting temps per wood type, wood, conditions, ect... I assumed everyone used a area to guage.
