It looks like you stole maple from someone else's pile!! :vampire:

Not stolen, it's sitting next to some oak. I got the "maple" from president Roosevelts property on LI. Does it burn well?

the round on its side looks like hemlock to me

if you are talking about the block of wood in the middle of the picture; I think that looks most like Tulip Poplar - certainly not maple. Hemlock bark is darker almost black.

Tulip burns fine, its just really light, so its not going to last a long time. I'm perfectly happy burning poplar. just mix it in.

Does it smell like a 2x4 when you split it ?

Does the wood have a distinct odor? It looks like Sassafras to me.Is it very lite?

If it is sassafras it will smell like root beer. I have a lot of sassafras trees on my property...just cut another one up earlier this week. smells great and splits easy.

sassafras??? that would be one huge sassafras!!

check out the block to the right that has been used as a chopping block - look how small the maul marks look, which shows how big those blocks are.

tulip poplar grows huge and straight, and I think is a much more likely candidate

the chopping block is definitely not poplar, but the other really looks like it.

lets see what else has bark like that:

Ash, but that is usually darker and sometimes finer/narrower furrows with some vertical breaks

chestnut oak, but the furrows are much larger/coarser

cottonwood, but again, the furrows are usually larger/deeper

I have not split any yet. And if it smells like a 2X?

pics are tough. Nothing like having it in your hands or under foot.

That would not be a "huge" Sassafras in my area, I often see what I would call an average size Sassafras come through here, but no one else thinks they get that big, must not be common in other areas, sure is in these parts. Have we heard if it has a smell, could we see a split?

Looks like the bark here in this Sassafras picture.

I think we need more pics and pics of a freshly split piece. There are a lot of ideas here, but no concensus.

I'll split tomorrow, sniff, and post photos. I don't know if there is sassafrass in this area, but the previous photo looks similar to what I have.

They have a pretty wide range
